From the Internet Encyclopedia of Philosophy , this article is an excellent introduction to the philosophy and philosophers of the Vienna Circle. Excerpt: Group of philosophers who gathered round Moritz Schlick, after his coming in Vienna in 1922. They organized a philosophical association, named Verein Ernst Mach (Ernst Mach Association). However, meetings on philosophy of science and epistemology began as early as 1907, promoted by Frank, Hahn and Neurath, who later arranged to bring Schlick at the University of Vienna. Among Vienna Circle's members were M. Schlick, R. Carnap, H. Feigl, P. Frank, K. Gödel, H. Hahn, V. Kraft, O. Neurath, F. Waismann. Also K. R. Popper and H. Kelsen had many contacts with the Vienna Circle, although they did not belong to it. At the meetings was also discussed Wittgenstein's Tractatus , and there were several meetings between Wittgenstein, Schlick, Waismann and Carnap. In 1929 Hahn, Neurath and Carnap published the manifesto of the circle:

Karl Menger (1902 - 1985) was a member of the famous "Vienna Circle", one of the most important philosophizing groups with regard to the development of analytic philosophy. Menger worked mainly on geometry. It is less well-known that he also published a book on ethics (published first in 1934). In the introduction I try to sketch the development of analytical ethics since the times of the "Vienna Circle". The upshot is this: Perhaps it is not possible to make mistakes in morals that are analogous to mistakes in science in spite of that it may be possible to show that decisions for action can be characterized as rational or irrational, and that provides a basis for achieving binding results in the discussion of moral problems.

The gasket was originally described in two dimensions but represents a family of objects in other dimensions. This family of objects will be discussed in dimensions 1, 2, 3, and an attempt will be made to visualise it in the 4th dimension. The nineteenth century mathematician Georg Cantor became fascinated by the infinite number of points on a line segment. The set of points described here has been attributed to Cantor because of his attempts to imagine what happens when an infinite number of line segments are removed from an initial line interval. To generate the Cantor set start with a closed interval [0,1] (includes the points and 1). On the first iteration replace the interval with 3 equal length pieces and remove the middle third, or ]1/3, 2/3[ (excludes the points 1/3 and 2/3) Subsequent iterations involve removing the middle portion of the remaining line segments.. The gap removed each time is usually called a trema from the Latin tremes = termite.

Lao Tze, from the Tao Te Ching This year's team for the Mathematical Contest in Modeling spent from Friday morning until Monday afternoon in early February locked away in the depths of the Physics Building, working on the Grade Inflation Problem. The team, consisting of Jeff Mermin '00, John Thacker '01, and Garrett Mitchener '99, earned a ranking of Outstanding, the highest possible award. Only seven teams world wide earned such a high ranking. The team has been invited to present their paper at a math conference in Toronto, expenses paid. The two problems for this year were to render oblique cross sections of MRI scans, and to find a way to select the top ten percent of students in a college where the average grade is an A-. Unlike the problems in most math competitions, these problems have no single right answer. Solution papers are judged based on creativity, clarity, and completeness.
