He actively opposed the Jacobite Rebellion of and assisted in the defence of Edinburgh but had to flee to York upon the approach of the Highlanders. [1741-1755] MS Gen 146 After graduating at Glasgow University in 1711, Robert Simson spent a year in London where he met several eminent mathematicians, amongst them Edward Halley. It was the latter's influence that tended to confirm Simson's interest in the writings of the Greek mathematicians. In 1712 Simson returned to Glasgow as Professor of Mathematics. The rest of his life was spent in teaching and in research on the early Greek mathematicians - he published important works on Euclid, Pappus of Alexandria and Apollonius of Perga.
