A center of Greek intellectual and cultural life, the Museum included many independent schools and the great library of Alexandria. Hypatia studied with her father, and with many others including Plutarch the Younger. She herself taught at the Neoplatonist school of philosophy. She became the salaried director of this school in 400. She probably wrote on mathematics, astronomy and philosophy, including about the motions of the planets, about number theory and about conic sections. She corresponded with and hosted scholars from others cities. Synesius, Bishop of Ptolemais, was one of her correspondents and he visited her frequently. Hypatia was a popular lecturer, drawing students from many parts of the empire.

Extractions: Supplementary: toc ... to restore theology to the mainstream of science There are many ways to define mathematics: Mathematics is the science of quantitative relations and spatial forms in the real world. Hazewinkel , Mathematics. ... a group of related subjects, including Algebra, Geometry, Trigonometry and Calculus, concerned with the study of number, quantity, shape and space, and their inter-relationships, applications, generalisations and abstractions. Borowski , Mathematics. Somebody once said that philosophy is the misuse of terminology which was invented for just that purpose. In the same vein, I would say that mathematics is the science of skillful operations with concepts and rules invented for just this purpose. The principal emphasis is on the invention of concepts. ... The great mathematician fully, almost ruthlessly, exploits the domain of permissible reasoning and skirts the impermissible. Wigner According to the formalist point of view, mathematics should be regarded as a purely formal game played with marks on paper, and the only requirement this game need fulfill is that it does not lead to an inconsistency.

Extractions: Supplementary: toc ... to restore theology to the mainstream of science Here we think of mathematics as the science of pure imagination. There is simply not enough matter in the earth to construct a physical infinite set. That does not preclude mathematicians from talking about infinite sets, however. The guiding criterion for mathematics is that its creations be consistent. Mathematical language exists as an aid to consistency and communication. We think of it as an extension of natural language. Mathematics extends some features of natural language to enable us to deal with much larger sets of objects than we normally encounter in daily life. We see mathematics stretching back to the beginning of recorded history, so we can only speculate about its origins. Here we use naming as a starting point to explore the nature of mathematics. Naming extablishes a correspondence between two things. In natural languages, names are aeen as very different from things. My name is a word; I am a massive and complex physical object. Mathematics deals only with names, so that all its correspondences exist between names only. It completely ignores the physical embodiment of names. Traditionally, mathematics is divided into two areas, arithmetic and geometry. Arithmetic is concerned with numbers. Applied arithmetic uses numbers to model the relationships of distinct, countable objects like sheep and monetary units. Geometry is concerned with space. Applied geometry deals with the measurement and calculation of continuous objects like land and buildings.
