Sophist means a teacher of rhetoric. It came from the term sophites which meant wise, prudent, statesmanlike or skilled at one's craft. They were basically traveling teachers that charged a fee for their lessons. "They taught many different things including public speaking, grammar, linguistic theory, moral and political doctrines, doctrines about god and nature and the origins of man, literary analysis and criticism, mathematics, and physical theories of the universe." Basically they would teach whatever was in demand. There were others but the most famous sophists include Protagoras of Abdera, who is considered the first of the sophists, Euclides of Megara, Hippias Of Elias, Prodicus of Ceos, and Gorgias of Leontini. Prodicus of Ceos was a disciple of Protagoras. He came to Athens as a ambassador. There he opened a school of rhetoric. He thought that the right use right words and the accurate discrimination of synonyms was very important. He teachings in Athens were at about the same time as the end of the Peloponnesian War. Prodicus considered himself a Sophist but defined one as "midway between a philosopher and a statesman." At one time Socrates was one of his disciples but according to Socrates, he did not learn anything from Prodicus. Socrates once remarked that he sent young men to Prodicus who he did not think could be helped by his own teachings. People loved to hear him speak even though he had an unpleasant sounding voice. His most famous work was "The Choice of Hercules". His other famous writings were "the Hours" and "on Nature". He was put to death in Athens for corrupting the youth, forced to drink hemlock, but it is doubtful he ever got a trial.

In herabsetzender Weise spricht man auch von "Sophisterei" (Weismacherei). Wen wir heute den Sophisten zuordnen, unterscheidet sich von der antiken Meinung. In der modernen Forschung werden Wanderlehrer als Sophisten bezeichnet, die - unter anderem auch in Athen - ihr Wissen gegen Geld feilboten. Die Forschung ist sich nicht einig, ob das Gemeinsame an den Sophisten nun ihr Lehrberuf, ihr Interesse an der Rhetorik oder ihre philosophischen Ansichten sind. Im Athen des fünften und sechsten Jahrhunderts wurden auch die so genannten Naturphilosophen und sogar Sokrates als Sophisten bezeichnet. Das Neue an den Sophisten war, dass sie versprachen, eine areté zu lehren, die befähigen sollte, im politischen Leben erfolgreich zu sein. Revolutionär erschien ihr Anspruch, dass diese Fähigkeit, die politische areté , lehrbar sein sollte, hatte man doch zuvor geglaubt, nur von Geburt her edlen Menschen, das heißt der Aristokratie würde dieses Wissen nützen. Il s’intéressa à la poésie, à la Grammaire, à l’Histoire, à la Politique, à la Musique, à la Sculpture, à l’Architecture, aux Mathématiques et à l’Astronomie… ainsi que le faisait tout bon « penseur » à son époque. Platon qui apparemment ne l’appréciait pas, le décrit comme un personnage vaniteux, arrogant et vantard, n’ayant que des connaissances superficielles dans les nombreux domaines qu’il se flattait de connaître. Hippias se disait capable d’improviser un discours sur n’importe quel sujet. Il écrivit des poésies, des épopées, des tragédies et toutes sortes d’œuvres en prose. Il maîtrisait parfaitement toutes les techniques du calcul, connaissait la Géométrie, l’Astronomie, l’Harmonie musicale et la Rhétorique. Il possédait surtout une mémoire prodigieuse qu’il cultivait sans cesse. A la fin de sa vie, il était encore capable de réciter cinquante noms dans l’ordre où il les avait entendus une seule fois. Tout ce qu’il portait sur lui : vêtements, sandales, objets personnels, il l’avait fabriqué de ses propres mains.
