It was from this house, using a telescope of his own design that William discovered the planet Uranus in 1781. His observations helped to double the known size of the solar system. Following a tradition of the great astronomers of the renaissance he pushed forward the science of building telescopes. He was rewarded for his work by King George III, and also received the Copley Medal. Caroline also made a huge contribution to the field of astronomy. The work of the Herschels clearly had an impact on modern science and space exploration. To quote from the patron of the museum Patrick Moore, "William Herschel was the first man to give a reasonably correct picture of the shape of our star-system or galaxy; he was the best telescope-maker of his time, and possibly the greatest observer who ever lived".

I am the only tool which he has shaped to his use - a well-trained puppy-dog would have done as much" - Caroline Herschel Following the discovery of Uranus in 1781 Caroline Herschel became increasingly involved in the science of astronomy. Not only did she help her brother with recording and noting his observations, but she made a significant contribution in her own right. Initially she was given a small refracting telescope by William to enable her to hunt for comets. "Aug. 1. I have calculated 100 nebulae today, and this evening I saw an object which I believe will prove tomorrow night to be a comet." For all his remarkable achievements William Herschel failed to discover a comet, but for many years his sister, Caroline became an avid comet hunter discovering at least eight new ones. Her achievements in this field were recognised by the scientific establishment who awarded her medals and honours at the end of her life. Until the age of 40, William Herschel was a prolific composer. Although much of his music is now lost and much of what is known is rarely performed, his musical repertoire ranged between symphonies, chamber music and choral works. He wrote for instruments as diverse as the organ, flute, cello, viola and harpsichord.

She served in the home of her parents until 1772, when her brother William took her to England. First a housekeeper and singer for the organist William, she became his general assistent, and engaged in astronomy together with William. Most of her astronomical work was helping William by writing down his observations, but besides that work, Caroline was observing on her own, notably with a 27-inch focal length Newtonian 'sweeper.' She discovered a number of deepsky objects in the time of 1783-87, notably an independent discovery of M110 (NGC 205) , the second companion of the Andromeda Galaxy. According to G. Buttmann (1961) , p. 64, Caroline stated to have observed 14 objects until the end of 1783 alone, but the present author is only aware of a total of 13 (of which only 10 or 11 were known at that time). Between 1786 and 1797, she discovered a total of eight comets. .. more to come soon ..

Caroline's father Isaac was an oboist in the Hanovarian Foot Guards and rose to become the bandmaster. His interests in music, philosophy and astronomy led to lively conversations in their home but Caroline's mother disapproved of learning in general and although she reluctantly accepted that her four sons should have some education, she strongly opposed her daughters doing anything other than the household chores. Caroline Herschel was a woman astronomer and scientist that lived during both the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. She is best known for her major contribution to the study of comets. Caroline Lucretia Herschel was born in Hanover, Germany on March 16, 1750, the daughter of Isaac and Anna Isle Moritzen Herschel. Her father, Isaac, was a gardener by trade to support his family, but he was also a clever musician, an oboist in the Hanovarian Foot Guards, rising to the position of bandmaster. Although he had no formal education, he strove to educate his four sons and two daughters and encouraged them all to learn mathematics, French, and music. Anna, however, looked upon education with disdain. While she reluctantly accepted that her four sons should receive some education, she strongly objected to her daughters receiving any education beyond that of basic housekeeping. While her brothers were all raised to be musicians, Caroline had a thirst for knowledge that her father tried to satisfy, despite her mothers strong opposition. bodyOffer(27649) Tragedy struck Caroline at the age of ten and she contracted Typhus, which stunted her growth so that she never grew past four foot three inches tall. Because of her deformity, her father told her that she would never marry and would live out her life without a mate. This prediction became true, but she had many lifelong friends and admirers.

After the French occupation of Hanover in 1757, Isaac was occupied fighting the French and so was not at home. William escaped to England, where he became a music teacher, and Caroline was left under the control of her mother who sent her to learn to knit and otherwise kept her fully occupied with household chores. In 1760 Isaac returned home in poor health and Caroline essentially lived the life of a servant until he died in 1767. The death of her father seems to have made Caroline realise that she had to take some control of her own life and she took lessons in dressmaking and studied to qualify as a governess. However, fitting in the studies while her mother demanded so much work from her proved a great strain. In 1766 William became an organist in Bath and, in 1772, Caroline joined him there. She made this move despite strong protests from her mother who was very unhappy at effectively losing a servant. Caroline had always been very close to her brother William and, after arriving in Bath, she trained as a singer receiving lessons from her brother. William taught Caroline more than musical skills. He had studied mathematics and astronomy in his spare time at the end of a long day after many hours teaching music, reading works such as Maclaurin's

Isaac Herschel encouraged all six of his children to train in mathematics, French and music. Caroline's mother did not see the need for a girl to become educated and preferred to make Caroline a house servant to the rest of the family. At the age of ten Caroline was stricken with typhus. The disease permanently stunted her growth. Her parents concluded that she would never marry but would live her life as an old maid. Caroline remained in her parents' home until, at the age of twenty-two, her brother, William took her to live with him in Bath, England. Caroline became her brother's housekeeper. William was an accomplished musician and a conductor. He gave Caroline voice lessons and trained her in mathematics as well. Caroline became a well known soprano and began to sing professionally. William's hobby was astronomy and he devoted most of his free time to making more and more powerful telescopes with which to look deeper into space.

Caroline, nicknamed Lina, was born in Hanover, Germany on March 16, 1750, the fifth of six children of Isaac Herschel and Anna Ilse Moritzen. Isaac, an oboist and gardener, gave his daughter a rudimentary education, despite his wife's disapproval. Caroline suffered childhood diseases which scarred her for life. At age three, her cheeks were scar-pocked and her left eye was slightly disfigured by Smallpox. Her diminutive height of 4'3" was caused by Typhus at the age of 10. Her father told her she would never marry and her mother's plans for her were that of maid. When Caroline was 22, it was her favorite brother, Freidrich Wilhelm (nicknamed Fritz and later known as William), who rescued her from a dreary existence as their mother's scullery maid. He had moved to England seven years earlier where he had made a life for himself as a musician. On a visit to Hanover, he vowed to save his dear "Lina" and brought her with him upon his return to Bath, England.

American Commodore and Scientist She attended Yale and New York Universities during World War II when she joined the Naval Reserve. She was commissioned a Lieutenant and ordered to the Bureau of Ordinance Computation Project at Harvard, where she learned to program computers. She later worked as a mathematician in Philadelphia, and helped program the first commercial large-scale electronic computer. Her navy career resumed in 1967 after she had been inactive since the war. She was appointed in 1983 as Commodore; the title of that grade changed to Rear Admiral in1985. Many colleges and universities have conferred honorary degrees on Admiral Hopper, and she was the recipient of the first Computer Sciences 'Man of the Year' award presented by the Data Processing Management Association. Russian Mathematician Mathematician and novelist who studied in Germany. She wrote a remarkable thesis on partial differential equations. In 1884 she became professor of higher mathematics at the University of Stockholm. Four years later she was awarded the Prix Borodin for a paper on the rotation of a solid body around a fixed point. Her work was so extraordinary that the value of the prize was doubled.

In the autumn of 1772 she joined her brother William in England, where he had established himself as a teacher of music at Bath . She co-operated with him both in his professional duties and in the astronomical researches to which he had already begun to devote all his spare time. She was the principal singer at his oratorio concerts, and acquired such a reputation as a vocalist that she was offered an engagement for the Birmingham festival, which, however, she declined. When her brother accepted the office of astronomer to George III , she became his constant assistant in his observations, and also executed the laborious calculations which were connected with them. Her chief amusement during her leisure hours was sweeping the heavens with a small Newtonian telescope.
