    Extractions: The Galileo Project Science Thomas Harriot Thomas Harriot (1560-1621) Nothing is known of Harriot's life up to the time when, at age seventeen, he matriculated at the University of Oxford. The record states that he was from the county of Oxford and that his father was a commoner. Harriot studied at St. Mary's Hall, took his degree in 1580, and went to London. Here he was employed by Sir Walter Ralegh and in 1585 went with the expedition to Virginia organized by Ralegh as cartographer and one versed in the theory of navigationin our terms, as staff scientist. Harriot returned in 1586 and wrote an account of Virginia and its natives, A Briefe and True Report of the New Found Land of Virginia , published in 1588. In the meantime, Harriot had joined Ralegh in Ireland, which the English were colonizing at that time. Ralegh granted Harriot a former abbey, where Harriot lived for a few years. Back in London, Harriot came into contact with William Percy, 9th Earl of Northumberland, and in 1598 he left Ralegh and entered the service of Northumberland, who gave him a pension and living quarters (and later a separate house) at Syon House, just west of London. In 1605 Harriot was briefly imprisoned along with Northumberland as a result of the Gunpowder Plot. Harriot was quickly released but the earl remained in the Tower of London until 1622. Harriot lived at Syon for the rest of his life. In 1613 he developed an cancerous ulcer (on his nostril), which was the eventual cause of his death.

    Extractions: Better known as the second Englishman to lead an expedition around the world, Thomas Cavendish also played an important role in the expeditions know as the Roanoke Voyages. In 1585 he participated with Sir Richard Grenville in planting the Ralph Lane colony by bringing his ship Elizabeth to the area now known as North Carolina. Born at Grimston Hall near the port of Harwich in Suffolk, England, circa 1555, Cavendish, like many others of his generation and class, turned to piracy in order to make his fortune. His first recorded adventure was the 1585 voyage to Roanoke Island. In addition to Cavendish's Elizabeth (50 tuns), Grenville and Lane sailed with Tyger (160 tuns), Roebuck (140 tuns), Lyon (100 tuns) and two smaller pinnaces. They departed from Plymouth on 9 April 1585 and planned for the fleet to sail together to the West Indies via the Canary Islands; however, in bad weather off the coast of Portugal, one of the pinnaces sank and the other ships separated. In his ship Tyger , Grenville sailed on alone to the rendezvous point off Puerto Rico where he constructed a fortification and built a new pinnace.

Harriot left nearly 200 drawings of sunspots from the period 1610-1612. Reproduced from the paper by W.M. Mitchell cited below. The text for December 8 reads: "Decemb. 8 mane ho. That altitude of the sonne being 7 or 8 degrees. It being a frost & a mist. I saw the sonne in this manner. Instrument 10/1 B. I saw it twise of thrise. once with the right ey & other time with the left. In the space of a minutes time. after the sonne was too cleare" Interestingly, the text does not mention the spots explicitly, even though they are clearly indicated on the drawing. Like the Fabricius father and son team but unlike Galileo and Scheiner , Harriot observed the sun directly through his telescope. His observations were consequently limited to the hour following sunrise, when, as seen from Harriot's residence in Syon, the Sun was greatly dimmed by mist and fog over the river Thames. Little is known of him before he received his bachelor's degree from the University of Oxford in 1580. Throughout his working life, he was supported by the patronage, at different times, of Sir Walter Raleigh and Henry Percy, the 9th earl of Northumberland; he was never, after his student years, affiliated with an academic institution or commercial organization. From 1585 to 1586 he participated in Raleigh's colony on Roanoke Island, and he may have visited Virginia as early as 1584; upon his return, he published A Briefe and True Report of the New Found Land of Virginia (1588). This was his only work published during his lifetime. Very soon after the Virginia sojourn, Harriot was living on and surveying Raleigh's estates in Ireland. Concurrently with Galileo Galilei's introduction of telescopic observations of the heavens in 1609, Harriot commenced telescopic observations, some systematic, others not. He drew charts of the Moon, followed the paths of the moons of Jupiter, and observed sunspots. He also observed comets. During his lifetime Harriot was known in England among the philosophically inclined, and his reputation extended to the continent to the extent that the astronomer Johannes Kepler initiated a correspondence with him.
