He was impressed with the printing press because it allowed printers to print pages that were neat and easy to read. Mill dreamed of offering that kind of power to everyone. He wanted to create a machine that would allow everyone to print messages that looked just like handwriting. In 1714 he was given permission by the Queen of England to make his machine. Mill named the invention he wanted to make a

This program is brought to you by the Womens Center at the University of Virginia located on the UVA Corner and WTJU. Im Patrice Delevante and today we will be discussing, in celebration of Black History Month, the achievements of African-American women part 4 of 4 series. During the month of February, I focused on the achievements of largely unknown and ignored yet highly influential black women and their contribution to American society. Part 1 of my 4 series focused on Pauline Hopkins and Fannie Lou Hamer. Pauline Elizabeth Hopkins best-known novel, Contending Forces: A Romance Illustrative of Negro Life North and South plays an important part in American literature since it deals with the American problem of racism and sexism in literature and everyday life. Fannie Lou Hammer used her political interests to advocate for the end of racial and economic injustice during the Civil Rights Movement of the 1960s. Part 2 of 4 series focused on commemorating the 50-year anniversary of the U.S. Supreme Court ruling in favor of Linda Brown that segregating students in public school by race was unconstitutional because it denied black children their constitutional rights to equal protection of the law. Part 3 of 4 series focused on the legacy of strong and independent women in African-American history such as Condoleezza Rice (Former provost at Stanford University and current National Security Advisor of the US), Oprah Winfrey (media mogul, billionaire, Academy Award nominee, host of highly televised show, editor of the most brought magazine

While Granville slept peacefully the Friday night before the Thanksgiving holiday, artist Aaron Kramer, 18, picked up his brushes, and with the familiarity of a street hes walked hundreds of times, created a work of art on the wall of Whits Frozen Custard on East Broadway. The many well-known storefronts on the north side of the Villages main street, depicted freely over the years on canvas, paper, fabric, or wood, rise again, this time as an exquisite wall mural.

African Mathematicians obstacles. In class, we learned about four of these mathematicians; Hypatia,ThomasFuller, Benjamin Banneker and evelyn Boyd granville. http://everyschool.org/u/logan/culturalmath/africanmathematicians.htm
Extractions: African mathematicians have made many contributions in mathematics and science. Many times, these mathematicians had to overcome great obstacles. In class, we learned about four of these mathematicians; Hypatia,Thomas Fuller, Benjamin Banneker and Evelyn Boyd Granville. Hypatia, an Egyptian by origin, lived in Alexandria around 300 AD. She was the daughter of mathematician and philosopher Theon. As head of the Platonist school of Alexandria, she was identified by Christians as a pagan. As riots broke out in Alexandria between Christian and non-Christian groups, Hypatia became the focal point of the controversy. Because Hypatia refused to convert to Christianity she was murdered in 415 AD by a group of Christian fanatics. She developed ideas about conic sections and wrote commentaries on Diophantus's Arithmetica. She also wrote in Apollonius Conics about dividing cones into different parts by a plane. With her work in this important book, she helped make the concepts of conics easier to understand. Hypatia was the first woman to have such a great impact on the survival of early mathematics. Although all of her work is lost, the titles and references survive to this day.
