    Extractions: Fine needle aspiration is one method physicians use to obtain samples from lymph glands near a person's lungs. This diagnostic tool helps doctors understand how far progressed a patient's lung cancer is. Among the early places a lung cancer may spread is the lymph glands that drain the lung. When this happens, the lymph glands enlarge, much as the lymph glands in the neck swell when there is a throat infection. With lung cancer, a spread to the lymph glands is typically seen on a chest x-ray or on a CT scan of the chest (sometimes called a "CAT scan"). But there are other reasons why the lymph glands in the chest may be enlarged. A biopsy of the lymph glands is the best way to determine whether the cancer has spread. Sometimes, when there are localized abnormalities on a chest x-ray, the doctor will recommend a biopsy with a needle to determine the cause of the abnormality. Often cancer is suspected in this situation, but there are other non-cancerous conditions that can be diagnosed with a needle biopsy. Getting a definite diagnosis is crucial to proper planning for treatment. This is typically an outpatient procedure. Usually, no sedation is needed for needle biopsy of the lung. Local anesthetics are used to numb the skin and reduce any pain from inserting the needle. X-ray guidance during the procedure allows the doctor to place the needle in the same location as the abnormality. Frequently an answer is obtained within minutes of performing the procedure.

The Hortense Ferne and Henry Ferne II Memorial Art Library was established July of 1985 by Henry Ferne II in memory of his mother Hortense Ferne. Mrs. Ferne had a long lived interest in art. Her etchings and lithographs have been exhibited in the Smithsonian, Library of Congress, Museum of the Statue of Liberty, Philadelphia Museum, Metropolitan Museum of New York, and Wadworth Atheneum of Hartford. Her paintings have been displayed in the Graphic Sketch Club and the Lanape Club and the Barnum Circus Museum in Philadelphia, Cardinal Portrait in Rome, Republican Club in New York. Thanks to the generosity of Benjamin Kirkland, adopted son of Henry Ferne II, the room was expanded and refurbished in 1996. New shelves were built to accommodate the large size of many of the art books and a case was constructed to store the many art reproductions that are available to the public.

Now Robert, when his brother Fine-Scholar came to the throne, was still absent in the Holy Land. Henry pretended that Robert had been made Sovereign of that country; and he had been away so long, that the ignorant people believed it. But, behold, when Henry had been some time King of England, Robert came home to Normandy; having leisurely returned from Jerusalem through Italy, in which beautiful country he had enjoyed himself very much, and had married a lady as beautiful as itself! In Normandy, he found Firebrand waiting to urge him to assert his claim to the English crown, and declare war against King Henry. This, after great loss of time in feasting and dancing with his beautiful Italian wife among his Norman friends, he at last did.

A traveling exhibition devoted to the work of this singular artist is on view at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts in Philadelphia until January 2, 2000, after which it travels to the High Museum of Art in Atlanta (which organized it), where it is on view from February 26 to May 21, 2000.     Extractions: Clare Island from Achill Oil on canvas 12" x 17.25" Paul Henry was born in Belfast in 1876 where he had a strict religious upbringing. After leaving school he worked as an apprentice with a Belfast linen firm. He then left to pursue a career as an artist and enrolled in the Belfast School of Art. In 1898 he went to Paris where he attended the Academie Julian and James McNeill Whistler's Academie Carmen. From Whistler he acquired an appreciation of the value of tone over colour, and this is displayed in his use of charcoal, a medium with which he was especially competent. He also admired the work of Jean Francois Millet, the Barbizon painter of French peasant life. In 1901 he moved to London and worked as an illustrator of books and magazines. While in Paris he had met Grace Mitchell , a Scottish painter and they were married in 1903. He first exhibited his paintings in London in 1906 at a group exhibition. In the summer of 1910, he travelled with his wife to Achill island, off the coast of County Mayo. They stayed for almost a year and in 1912 they settled there, until they moved to Dublin in 1919. Possibly reminded of the paintings of Millet, Paul Henry began to paint the daily activities of the poor islanders, showing them harvesting seaweed, gathering turf, and fishing. He was captivated by the "other worldliness" of the rugged landscape, particularly in the early morning, and he was also attracted by the effects of the rapidly changing light in the west.

    Extractions: White Roses Oil on canvas 13.5" x 10.5" Grace Henry's "White Roses" formed part of the 1991 exhibition of works by Paul and Grace Henry at the Hugh Lane Municipal Gallery of Modern Art in Dublin. The painting uses expressionistic and fluid brushwork along with a range of very subtle and calm tones to depict this beautiful still life of blue-greys and pinks. Henry has pitched the viewpoint slightly above the vase, situating the vessel near the edge of a table that is adjacent to a wall, thus providing the work with a framework of two planes viewed at an angle. The vase of white roses acts as the vertical linch-pin which, together with the table and the decorated wall, structures the whole composition and makes for a very interesting piece. Grace Henry was born Emily Grace Mitchell in Peterhead, Aberdeenshire, Scotland. She was the second youngest of ten children of a Church of Scotland minister John Mitchell and his wife Jane Garden (who was related to Byron). Grace Mitchell was born into a family of comfortable means helped by private income. She was educated first at home by governesses and later at a London finishing school. Her mother's family had a house in Piccadilly and she may have stayed on in London after her education. In the late 1890's she was living in various lodgings in Aberdeen, exhibiting with the Aberdeen Artists' Society in 1898 and 1900. In the three years following, she studied in Brussels and at Paris ateliers, where she met and in 1903 married Paul Henry. She was by then thirty-five, and yet her life as Grace Henry and her career as a painter was only just beginning. Both were to last for a further fifty years, though she later separated from Paul.
