BWR Fave Essays: Fincke, "...Diaries" book I found on the shelves in the back of the room, Gary fincke repeated like a Morerecently, thomas Wirgman arranged his selfpublished books by page color. http://www.webdelsol.com/bwr/faves/fincke.html
Extractions: Gary Fincke In 1957, a mother and daughter produced thirty volumes of what they claimed were Benito Mussolini's diaries. The older woman, it turned out, had perfected Mussolini's handwriting, duplicating it well enough to fool Mussolini's son and the requisite university expert, who exclaimed, after examining the diaries, "Thirty volumes of manuscript cannot be the work of a forger, but of a genius." The fraud progressed well enough to gather attention and embarrass a number of people, something like the later, more publicized Hitler Diaries fiasco. Except the Sunday Times of London, eleven years after the forgery was exposed, bought, from those same women, $71,400 worth of pages to publish. An extraordinary lapse of memory or research, although, in 1983, the daughter resurfaced to deny she and her mother had forged any of those thirty volumes, reasserting the authenticity of the diaries a generation after they were first exposed. Looking for yet another buyer, perhaps, or one more expert to nod approval, she insisted the original confession was coerced. Everybody knows such things happen, she said, that we're not responsible for what we say under pressure. Who knows what the police will do to us, what we'll be offered to confess? The third grade teacher, Miss Hartung, told us it was time to master cursive, starting with ovals repeated across the page. "Around, around, around," she chanted, and we all managed. We earned our inkwells; we jammed the steel points into place and held pens ready to write. Dip, swirl, and don't rest the tip on the paper. We had to master the Peterson Method unless we wanted to be fools like the printers and inkwell spillers, the stained ones who were going to be failures, on relief, heading straight for the trailer court or the North Side soup kitchens we passed on our field trips.

The 24-hour event commemorates the birth of wireless pioneer Guglielmo Marconi, who was born April 25, 1874. (IMD is usually held on the Saturday closest to Marconi's birthday.) The event is an opportunity for amateurs around the world to make contact with "Award Stations" on the air from various historic Marconi sites, such as VO1IMD on Signal Hill in Newfoundland, the Maritime Radio Historical Society's K6KPH in California (at the former KPH receiving site) and W1AA/MSC on Nantucket Island, Massachusetts. Members of the Cornish Radio Amateur Club (G4CRC) will be among them, operating as GB4IMD. Awards are available. A complete list of stations that will be on the air as well as additional information about IMD are on the CRAC Web site < http://www.gb4imd.co.uk/index.htm
