He kindly sent photos of his trip to share with all Bagism visitors. If you've never been to the memorial, hopefully these photos will give you a pretty good idea of what it's all about. In addition to the photos, John Taylor also provided this report of his day at the Strawberry Fields Memorial. "It's hard to comment about something that's almost indescribable. I think what is most special about the day I spent there was that I saw so many young people singing Beatles songs. Ones that weren't even born yet when John left this world. "One day I was sitting there and and a father came walking by with his two children. One of them asked what that was for (referring to the tile). He brought the children and had them sit down and explained to them what it meant to him. He went through the lyrics of the song Imagine and they were totally amazed by what he was saying. I knew that they would grow to be some really wonderful people. "There is something about the words that John gave us that bring out the best in people. And on October 9th and December 8th, everything really comes to a head, a point when a multitude of dreamers gather together for a day of peace, love and a whole lot of singing. There are people of all races, ages, creeds and everyone is equal no matter what. Throughout the year, Strawberry Fields is pretty much like that. There are letters, postcards, flowers and all kinds of stuff left there. There's a lot of positive energy that flows around and it catches on and brings out the best in all that accept it."

Extractions: In Flanders Fields Sickened by what he had seen during the Boer War, John McCrae nevertheless signed up in August 1914, and headed for France with his horse, Bonfire, in tow. He would have found few opportunities for riding in that hell on earth. Knee deep in mud and freezing water, men's feet rotted where they stood, waiting for the next attack of gas to insinuate its way down the trenches, or the signal to go "over the top", often into direct machine gun fire. McCrae wrote "In Flanders Fields" the day after presiding at the funeral of a friend and former student. The original poem (as written) appears above. McCrae was to number among the 9,000,000 fatalities that vicious, fratricidal war of attrition would claim. His asthmatic condition, exacerbated by poison gas, eventually led to pneumonia and meningitis in January of 1918. Here, you see his funeral procession. Note the rider's boots have been reversed in Bonfire's stirrups. The twin traditions of poetry and military service came naturally to John McCrae. In Scotland

It is a lasting legacy of the terrible battle in the Ypres salient in the spring of 1915. One of the most asked questions is: why poppies ? The answer is simple: poppies only flower in rooted up soil. Their seeds can lie on the ground for years and years, and only when someone roots up the ground, they will sprout. There was enough rooted up soil on the battlefield of the Western Front; in fact the whole front consisted of churned up soil. So in May 1915, when McCrae wrote his poem, around him poppies blossomed like no one had ever seen before. John McCrae's poem may be the most famous one of the Great War - often only the first two verses are cited or printed. This is not just because of the lack of quality in the third verse, but also because this last verse speaks of an unending quarrel with the foe. And if one thing became clear during the Great War it was this: there was no quarrel between the soldiers (except maybe in the heat of a fight). The quarrel existed only in the minds of some stupid politicians and high-ranking officers (who mostly never experienced the horror of the battlefield).

His father operated a leather shop at 32 King St. West, and the family lived nearby at 150 King St. East. (Both of these buildings have long since disappearedthe site of the shop is now occupied by Jackson Square, a shopping complex, and that of the house by a Ramada Inn). Fields graduated from the University of Toronto in 1884, and then left to study at Johns Hopkins University, probably attracted by the fact that Johns Hopkins apparently was the North American University that stressed research most strongly at that time. Its mathematics program had been set up by J.J.Sylvester during the years 187683 that he spent there. Fields was awarded a Ph.D. in 1887. His thesis was entitled Symbolic Finite Solutions and Solutions by Definite Integrals of the Equation d n y/dx n = x m y , and was published in the American Journal of Mathematics in 1886.After teaching at Johns Hopkins for two years, he joined the faculty of Allegheny College in Meadville, Pennsylvania, north of Pittsburgh. Fields was understandably dissatisfied with the state of mathematics in North America at that time, and in 1891 he left for Europe to spend the next 10 years there, combining a modest inheritance from his parents with economical living habits.

Abstract Many of the most famous old conjectures in mathematics arise from the theory of numbers and, of those, quite a few are concerned with prime numbers. One example is the Goldbach conjecture which predicts that every even integer, at least four, can be written as the sum of two primes. Questions about the distribution of primes began to see important progress during the nineteenth century, for the most part due to new developments in harmonic analysis and the theory of functions of a complex variable. Unfortunately these analytic techniques seem not to be capable of being adapted to the counting of primes in any but the simplest subsequences of the integers, such as for example the primes occurring in a short interval. Another line of attack, the ancient and elementary sieve method, seems more versatile and indeed can be formulated so as to provide an entry into rather general questions of this nature. Based on new ideas due to Brun and others during the first three quarters of the twentieth century, one was able to prove theorems which in various senses gave approximations to the desired conjectures. Whereas however, in contrast to the analytic method, one could say something worthwhile about a great many different problems, one could never seem (again in contrast to the analytic method) to prove the conjecture that was really wanted. Moreover, there were theoretical reasons which seemed to render this failure an inevitable outcome of the method.

Extractions: First Memorial Poppy Flanders Tours It is believed that doctor John McCrae (30 November 1872-28 January 1918) began the draft for his famous poem 'In Flanders Fields' on the evening of 2 May, 1915 in the second week of fighting during the Second Battle of Ypres . He was serving as a Major and military doctor and was second in command of the 1st Brigade Canadian Field Artillery. The field guns of his brigade's batteries were in position on the west bank of the Ypres-Yser canal, about two kilometres to the north of Ypres. The brigade had arrived there in the early hours of 23 April. Lieutenant Alexis Helmer was an officer in the 2nd Battery, 1st Brigade Canadian Field Artillery and had become good friends with John McCrae. On the morning of Sunday 2 May Alexis left his dugout and was killed instantly by a direct hit from an 8 inch German shell. What body parts could be found were later gathered into sandbags and laid in an army blanket for burial that evening. Alexis was 22 years old and a popular young officer. Before the outbreak of war he had graduated from McGill University with a degree in Civil Engineering. He was the son of Elizabeth I. Helmer of 122, Gilmour St., Ottawa, and the late Brigadier General R. A. Helmer.
