Poincaré developed his mathematical ideas of non-linear dynamics to deal with deep problems in physics at the same time that Sigmund Freud and Carl Jung were formulating the foundations of psycho-dynamics to deal with deep problems in human psychology. Until now there has been no bridge built between the ideas of the mathematician and the psychologists. A recent investigation of the similarity between the concepts of the non-linear dynamics of Chaos Theory and the psycho-dynamics of depth psychology, however, suggests they may share a common conceptual foundation (Rossi, 1996).
