Others bear the name of their discoverer: Euler's Formula Abelian group , or Bertrand's Paradox . However, it is a recorded part of the mathematical folklore that many theorems are misnamed [ K. O. May If Theorem X bears the name of Y, then it was probably first stated by and/or proved by Z. For example, not all mathematicians are happy with the customary attribution of Venn Diagrams to John Venn. Wilson's theorem was not proven by Wilson (1741-1793) but by J.L.Lagrange in 1770 and Stirling's formula was discovered by Abraham de Moivre. So I was not at all surprised to read in Hardy's Apology (p 81-82) the following remark concerning J. Farey of the Farey Series fame: ... Farey is immortal because he failed to understand a theorem which Haros had proved perfectly fourteen years before ... In Hardy and Wright (p 36) there appears another note The history of 'Farey series' is very curious. Theorems 28 and 29 (

Extractions: Peter Farey Peter Farey I 'm 64 years old, and just retired from being a freelance adviser in management development, before which I had been head of management training for a then 'favourite' UK airline, and chief executive of the UK's Air Transport Industry Training Association. My love of Shakespeare came mainly from acting in his works, which I would still do if only my memory were good enough, but I fear it isn't. Now I give poetry readings , where the script is right there in front of me! Just before going off for military service , I was a founder-member of the National Youth Theatre Henry V in which Simon ('Young Winston') Ward played Katherine, and a youngster called Derek Jacobi had a walk-on part! I've had a vague interest in Marlowe from my schooldays, when I was in Marlowe House at a school founded by his leading actor, Edward Alleyn. Despite having apparently sent well over 1200 mainly Marlovian posts to HLAS over the past four years, however, I still resist being called *a* Marlovian, which implies to me a certainty on the authorship question which I do not claim to have. www2.prestel.co.uk/rey/

They are named after a geologist, John Farey, who described their generation in [2]. See [1] for details and the interesting connection to Pick's Theorem. We have developed a mathlet that displays the elements of a F n at their locations in the unit interval, where n is chosen by the user. At p q , a line segment of height 1/ q is drawn, for each p q in F n . This method of display illustrates the self-similar structure of the rational numbers in a compelling manner. The mathlet can be used as a teaching and exploration tool at many levels, from middle schoolchildren learning relative sizes of fractions to real analysis students studying the classical example of a function whose set of points of continuity consists of exactly the irrational numbers.
Extractions: During the quarter of a century John Cipollina performed with his stellar electric guitar, he appeared with dozens of bands. Along with an impressive list of guest appearances of some of the greatest names in the business, John was a key member of more bands than any known musician. There were many Saturday nights when John would play one set at one club with one band, and then jam off to a second venue; during one period in the eighties he was simultaneously a member of six bands. The following list details the members of the fourteen major bands in which John was a key player. Some of those musicians mentioned only played with the affiliated band a few times; some were there at every gig or recording session. Quicksilver Messenger Service

His mother Evelyn, who also survives him, was a protege of famed concert pianist Jose Iturbi, who became godfather to John and his sister. As a child, John lived in San Salvador and Guatemala until the age of six when his family moved back to the Bay Area, settling in Mill Valley, CA. While other San Francisco groups at the time, namely the Grateful Dead, the JeffersonAirplane and Big Brother and the Holding Company, were all getting record deals and on the road touring, Quicksilver honed their sound. They became known primarily for long extended blues jams and developed quite a local following at The Fillmore Auditorium and Avalon Ballroom.

Marlowe's Sudden And Fearful End Peter farey. INTRODUCTION. An astonishing accusation against Ben Jonson appearedin john Aubrey s Brief Lives, some time in the second half of the century. http://www2.prestel.co.uk/rey/sudden.htm
Extractions: Self-Defence, Murder or Fake? INTRODUCTION On 11th July 2002, a little over four centuries since his untimely end, Christopher Marlowe was finally given some formal recognition as one of the finest poet-dramatists of his day by the dedication of a memorial window to him in Poets' Corner, Westminster Abbey. Some controversy over the event was stirred up, however, by the inclusion of a question mark against the year of his death, 1593. This essay - a revised and updated version of earlier ones - considers the facts surrounding his reported killing, and concludes that the addition of that question mark is fully justified. In particular we discover that the Coroner's report, the source of most people's understanding of how and when Marlowe died, is invalid. The Coroner of the Queen's Household, William Danby, had no authority to hold the inquest on his own, so the verdict it reached was legally null and void. A full explanation of this is given in my essay Was Marlowe's Inquest Void?
