Extractions: The arithmetic Riemann-Roch Theorem has been shown recently by Bismut-Gillet-Soul. The proof mixes algebra, arithmetic, and analysis. The purpose of this book is to give a concise introduction to the necessary techniques, and to present a simplified and extended version of the proof. It should enable mathematicians with a background in arithmetic...

Extractions: POINTERS: Texts Software Web links Selected topics here This section is the intersection of fields 11 (Number Theory) and 14 (Algebraic Geometry). The typical question in this area asks, "Are there any points on this variety (i.e., whose coordinates satisfy certain polynomial equations) whose coordinates are rational?" For example, the answer is "yes" when the coordinates are to satisfy the equation x^2+y^2=1 but "no" when the coordinates are to satisfy y^2=x^3-5. However, for simplicity we have placed most materials regarding this topic with the corresponding section of 14: Algebraic Geometry Attached below are a few topics on a related theme: what number-theoretic questions can we ask (and answer) regarding geometric figures? Material on elliptic curves is collected in see also 11Dxx, 14-XX, 14Gxx, 14Kxx Elliptic curves over global fields, See also 14H52

Extractions: Next: Erdos Number Up: Human Interest Previous: Indiana bill sets the This is the original letter by Fields creating the endowment for the medals that bear his name. It is thought to have been written during the few months before his death. Notice that no mention is made about the age of the recipients (currently there is a 40 year-old limit), and that the medal should not be attached to any person, private or public, meaning that it shouldn't bear anybody's name. It is proposed to found two gold medals to be awarded at successive International Mathematical Congress for outstanding achievements in mathematics. Because of the multiplicity of the branches of mathematics and taking into account the fact that the interval between such congresses is four years it is felt that at least two medals should be available. The awards would be open to the whole world and would be made by an International Committee. The fund for the founding of the medals is constituted by balance left over after financing the Toronto congress held in 1924. This must be held in trust by the Government or by some body authorized by government to hold and invest such funds. It would seem that a dignified method for handling the matter and one which in this changing world should most nearly secure permanency would be for the Canadian Government to take over the fund and appoint as his custodian say the Prime Minister of the Dominion or the Prime Minister in association with the Minister of Finance. The medals would be struck at the Mint in Ottawa and the duty of the custodian would be simply to hand over the medals at the proper time to the accredited International Committee.

Fermat's Last Theorem - Reference Library In 1983 gerd faltings proved the Mordell conjecture, which implies that for any n 2, there are at most finitely many coprime integers a, b and c with a n + b http://www.campusprogram.com/reference/en/wikipedia/f/fe/fermat_s_last_theorem.h
Extractions: Main Page See live article Alphabetical index Fermat's last theorem (also called Fermat's great theorem ) states that: There are no positive natural numbers a b , and c such that in which n is a natural number greater than 2. The 17th-century mathematician Pierre de Fermat wrote about this in in his copy of Claude-Gaspar Bachet 's translation of famous Diophantus Arithmetica , "I have discovered a truly remarkable proof but this margin is too small to contain it". The reason why this statement is so significant is that all the other theorems proposed by Fermat were settled either by proofs he supplied, or by more rigorous proofs supplied afterwards. Mathematicians long were baffled by this statement, for they were unable either to prove or to disprove it. The theorem has the credit of the largest number of wrong proofs. For various special exponents n , the theorem had been proved over the years, but the general case remained elusive. In Gerd Faltings proved the Mordell conjecture , which implies that for any n > 2, there are at most finitely many coprime integers
