Extractions: LEMNISCATE (from Gr. XrifuiltrKos, ribbon), a quartic curve invented by Jacques Bernoulli (Acta Eruditorum, 1694) and afterwards investigated by Giulio Carlo Fagnano, who gave its principal properties and applied it to effect the division of a quadrant into 2-2m, 3-2 and s-2m equal parts. Following Archimedes, Fagnano desired the curve to be engraved on his tombstone. The complete analytical treatment was first given by Leonhard Euler. The lemniscate of Bernoulli may be defined as the locus of a point which moves so that the product of its distances from two fixed points is constant and is equal to the square of half the distance between these points. It is therefore a particular form of Cassini's oval (see OVAL). Its cartesian equation, when the line joining the two fixed points is the axis of x and the middle point of this line is the origin, is (x2 + y2)2 = 2a-(xy2) and the polar equation is r2=2O2 cos 26. The curve (fig. i) consists of two loops symmetrically placed about the coordinate axes. The pedal equation is r* = a?p, which shows FIG. i. FIG. 2.

And at the heart of mathematics lies the concept of infinity, denoted by the lemniscate or symbol. This study takes as its departure point information available on the Internet, most notably information on the worldwide web and Usenet. How is the infinity symbol viewed and put to use on the Internet? Is it a taboo in this giant conversation spanning all languages, nations and cultures? Merriam-Webster define "taboo" as "forbidden to profane use or contact because of what are held to be dangerous supernatural powers", or "banned on grounds of morality or taste". Is the use of the infinity symbol prohibited in some or all cultures? What are its emotive associations? Signs and symbols have always been fundamental means of delivering messages. Their meaning and their content of information depend on the cultural contexts, so the same symbols could have distinctive meanings in different cultures.

Fisher in "On the Mathematical Foundations of Theoretical Statistics" Phil. Trans. R. Soc. 1922). He described the criterion of efficiency as "satisfied by those statistics which, when derived from large samples, tend to a normal distribution with the least possible standard deviation." (p. 310) He also wrote: "To calculate the efficiency of any given method, we must therefore know the probable error of the statistic calculated by that method, and that of the most efficient statistic which could be used. The square of the ratio of these two quantities then measures the efficiency." (p. 316) In the later literature Fishers concept would be described as asymptotic efficiency . Fisher did his first efficiency calculations in A Mathematical Examination of the Methods of Determining the Accuracy of an Observation by the Mean Error, and by the Mean Square Error (1920) unaware that Gauss had done similar calculations ( Bestimmung der Genauigkeit der Beobachtungen (1816)) a century earlier. However the idea of efficiency in extracting information was novel. [This entry was contributed by John Aldrich, based on David (1995).]
