In 1993-94 I acted as a consultant to the National Gallery of Canada for an exhibition of the work of Escher. Although Escher's status amongst critics and art curators is somewhat ambiguous the work of this Dutch artist work has attracted a considerable public, particularly for because of his play with visual and mathematical paradoxes. Escher's interest in tiling, figure-ground ambiguities and the illusions of recession in three dimensions are particularly attractive to scientists and mathematicians and his work was exhibited at the 1964 International Mathematical Congress in Amsterdam. The mathematician Roger Penrose also saw some of Escher's work, in the company of his father, Lionel Penrose a doctor and psychiatrist. Intrigued by Escher's approach Roger Penrose sketched an impossible figure - the Penrose triangle - which Escher later incorporated into several of his works. After Escher's death the mathematician regretted that he had not lived long enough to take advantage of the discovery of Penrose tiling. Another mathematician who took a professional interest in Escher's work was H.S.M.Coxeter. The Ottawa exhibition came about as the result of a generous donation of works by Escher's son who had emigrated to Canada. In preparation for the selection of works, the catalogue and educational activities at the gallery Brydon Smith from the National Gallery gathered us together for a highly stimulating series of meetings and discussions. Below are some notes arising out of these discussions. They are relatively rough and incomplete but, in view of the interest Escher continues to excite, they may be of interest to someone.

Maurits Cornelis (M.C.) Escher was born on June 17, 1898, in the Dutch province of Friesland . His parents, George Arnold Escher and Sarah Gleichman Escher, had three sons of which Maurits (called Mauk for short) was the youngest. His father, George, was a civil engineer. The Escher family was living in Leeuwarden in 1898, where George served as Chief Engineer for a government bureau. The family lived in a grand house named "Princessehof," which would later become a museum and host exhibitions of M.C. Escher's works. Young M.C. Escher moved with his family to Arnhem. He attended elementary and secondary school there, and also in the seaside town of Zandvoort, where he lived for a while to improve his health. In 1907, he started learning carpentry and piano. In secondary school, his marks were poor except in drawing. His art teacher took and interest in his drawing talent, and taught him to make linocuts. He failed his final exam and thus never officially graduated. In 1913, M.C. Escher met his lifelong friend Bas Kist in religious school (which he attended at his parent's direction, even though he wasn't very religious). Kist was also interested in printing techniques, and may have encouraged M.C. to make his first linoleum cut works. Amoung these early works is a portrait of his father which is the oldest surviving work by the artist. In 1917, the two friends visited the artist Gert Stegeman, who had a printing press in his studio. Some of M.C.'s work from this year were apparently printed at Stegeman's.

Op aanraden van zijn vader volgde Escher in 1919 een architectenopleiding aan de School voor Bouwkunde en Sierende Kunsten te Haarlem. Daar de bouwkunde hem niet lag, maar hij zeer geboeid werd door de lessen in grafische technieken van Samuel Jessurun de Mesquita, die Eschers aanleg voor grafiek onderkende, schakelde Escher over op de grafische opleiding. De Mesquita werd zijn belangrijkste leermeester tot Escher in 1922 de School verliet. Tot De Mesquita in 1944 door de Duitsers naar een concentratiekamp werd weggevoerd - hij kwam daar om het leven - zou Escher met zijn geliefde leermeester in contact blijven.

He showed talent from an early age and went to study at the Technical School of Art in Haarlem from 1919 to 1922. His early work consisted mainly of Italian inspired landscapes and towns, but he began to experiment with patterns of repeated images while still young. The bulk of his work up until 1937, however, was mainly focused on architecture though paying particular attention to matters of space and perspective. By the early Forties Escher's work was becoming progressively more complex. He utilised sophisticated mathematical principles with which to plan his mind-bending images. From 1944 onwards Escher's work became increasingly Surrealist, with his numerous optical illusions. Some his most famous works include 'Day and Night' (1938), 'House of Stairs' (1951) and 'Relativity' (1953). In his pictures, one is never sure where one should look first. Escher seems to be sending the viewer's eye on a wild goose chase as one looks for a start and end point to his images, only to be bombarded with an infinite set of possibilities. His fascination is with mirror images and geometrical questions. How far can he twist logic and still present a semblance of reality?

The inspiration there lay the foundation for his work after 1937, for which he is most famous. These works involve repeated patterns and regular divisions of the plane, impossible constructions, and infinite space. His work from then until his death in 1972 was driven by a unique understanding of mathematical concepts. Through his wondrous creations, Escher was able to lay a symbolic bridge between the realms of art and science.

Nel 1903 si trasferisce con tutta la famiglia ad Arnheim dove dal 1912 al 1918, frequenta il liceo con esiti disastrosi, tanto che alla prova di maturità viene addirittura respinto. "Contagiato" dalla passione per il disegno, a questo periodo, fra l'altro, si fanno risalire alcune incisioni su linoleum. Dopo grande fatica, riesce però alla fine a strappare la promozione e a conseguire il diploma. Come ogni buon artista che si rispetti, compie un viaggio in Italia, cosa che gli dà modo di osservare i massimi capolavori del passato e di rimanere profondamente affascinato dall'inestimabile sequenza di capolavori che ha modo di ammirare. Qui ha l'ispirazione per numerosi schizzi paesaggistici. Nello stesso anno, viene pubblicato un libretto di poesie di autori vari dal titolo " Fiori di Pasqua " che reca all'interno sue xilografie. Pochissimo portato per gli studi, come si è visto, è costretto a iscriversi alla facoltà di architettura per compiacere il padre, restio all'idea di non avere un figlio laureato, lui ingegnere affermato.
