The highest bids this year included beef, $3 a pound; hogs, $10 a pound; lamb, $24 a pound; goats, $22 a pound; chickens, $400 a pound; quail, $300 a pound; and rabbits, $450 a pound. Gross beef sales totaled $43,915; for hogs, $115,380; lambs, $86,525; goats, $20,748; chickens, $2,180; quail, $1,420; and rabbits, $1,290. Last year beef grossed $43,221 in sales; hogs, $107,606; lambs, $89,510.25; goats, $18,579; and rabbits, $1,440. No poultry were exhibited at last year's fair due to the outbreak in Southern California of Exotic Newcastle Disease. Overall, the livestock fetched good prices, said livestock superintendent Trish Reiff of Woodland. "The kids did really well at the auction and at the fair events." Many use the proceeds to build up their projects or save for their college education.

According to its General Editor, Andrew Horton, the five or six (mostly) original essays in each volume are intended to offer a "prism" approach, "a variety of theoretical, critical, and contextual perspectives" on a particular film (or, in the case of the Godfather trilogy, series of films). The breadth and diversity of the spectrums refracted from these 'prisms', however, varies a good deal from volume to volume. So, inevitably, does the quality both of the individual contributions and of the volumes in their entirety. In addition to the essays that make up the bulk of each volume, each handbook also includes a range of supplementary materials: a small selection of contemporary reviews, a filmography, and a select bibliography. Like the essays, these vary considerably in their usefulness from volume to volume. Some of the bibliographies, for instance, are more selective than others: the

Extractions: Igniting the Moral Imagination of Twenty-First Century Leaders Main The Ingenuity Gap . Homer-Dixon is an Associate Professor of Political Science at the University of Toronto and the Director of the Peace and Conflict Studies Program. Before we can answer the question he has put to us, we need to understand it. Our future will involve systems of increasing complexity that generate complex problems. In order to avoid serious disasters, we will often have to respond to these complex problems with incredible speed. If you complained in your math class that timed tests were unrealistic because in the real world one does not have to solve equations under such tight and arbitrary time constraints, you may want to reconsider. Homer-Dixon commences his discussion with a sobering discussion of United Airlines Flight 232 on July 19, 1989. That flight crew lost control of the rudders and elevators; their ability to steer was severely impaired. They were forced into a situation that demanded ingenuity under tremendous pressure. And, with some luck and cockpit team work they did well under the circumstances. The plane crash landed and 111 people died, but 185 survived. Thirty-five subsequent attempts to repeat the landing on a simulator failed. In truth
