    Extractions: While our field has done commendable work putting forward new ideas in operations strategy, we have historically done a less effective job validating concepts after their introduction. Given this issue, we attempted to test and extend one of the most influential OM configurations - Miller and Roth's taxonomy of manufacturing strategies. Their taxonomy was longitudinally replicated with a newer set of North America Manufacturing Futures data as well as an entirely different global sample. Our replications partially supported Miller and Roth's taxonomy of three strategy-types, but found no evidence of the two underlying dimensions of manufacturing strategy that they called market scope and differentiation. Interestingly, the Marketeers were replaced in the 1990s by a new strategy called Designers, and three other unique manufacturing strategies were identified in the global data.

The building and its site The building was reported to have been, at the time of its completion, the tallest building in Wolverhampton; but whether or not that included church spires or purely secular buildings was not stated [Oldham]. Map 1: part of John Steen's Map of Wolverhampton 1884. The site discussed here is shown outlined in red. Along Cleveland Road, on the way into town, stood the Staffordshire Hospital, the Baker building, the cattle market and St. George's church. At the back of the Hospital, the beginning of the All Saint's housing development could be seen and Cleveland House stood in its' own grounds. On the road to Bilston was the workhouse and there were wharves and factories along the canal which, along with the railway, bisected the road, whilst there was extensive housing arranged around courts on the far side of Bilston Street. It is known through the Town Commissioners' records that the cattle market was built on land purchased from the Duke of Cleveland at his own suggestion. The land on which Cleveland Road stands had of course once belonged to the Duke's estate but was sold by him to the Town Commissioners for their 1828/30 town road improvement scheme. The former Lord Darlington, granted the title of the Duke of Cleveland of the second creation, as a reward for backing the right side in the quarrel over the Reform Bill, thus had a road and two streets named after him (Cleveland Street connected Cleveland Road to town.

Dixon is vice president of the Farmers' Mutual Fire Insurance Company of Sacramento county and one of the leading agriculturists of the county, besides being in many other ways identified with the public and business affairs of his locality, where he has grown up from childhood and gained a place of honor and esteem among all his fellow citizens. Mr. William E. Dixon was reared and educated in this state and in Sacramento county. After attending the public schools he graduated, in 1877, from the Sacramento Business College, and since taking up the serious affairs of life has given his undivided attention to agricultural pursuits. He has been very successful in this line of endeavor, and is now the owner of a fine ranch of six hundred and forty acres near Elk Grove, and in addition leases and farms three hundred and twenty acres in the same neighborhood. April 26, 1882, Mr. Dixon married Miss Julia Barnes, who is a native of New Brunswick, Canada, a daughter of William Barnes, also of New Brunswick but now deceased. Mr. and Mrs. Dixon are the parents of eight children: Edna B., Annie M., Alfred C., Aubrey E., J. Hazel, Ruby H., William E., Jr., and Evelyn. Mr. Dixon is interested in educational matters in his community, and is a trustee of the Victor school district. He is a Republican in politics. Since its organization he has been an influential factor in the Farmers' Mutual Fire Insurance Company of Sacramento county, and is now serving as a director and also as vice president of this excellent organization.

    Extractions: format this article to print ARRINGTON, ALFRED W (1810-1867). Alfred W. Arrington, author and judge, was born in Iredell County, North Carolina, on September 17, 1810. In 1819 he moved to Arkansas, where he was a preacher from 1828 to 1834. He was admitted to the bar in Missouri in 1835, when he returned to Arkansas and was elected to the state legislature; he served until 1845 and moved to Texas. He visited Boston and New York in 1847 and there published Desperadoes of the South and Southwest (1849) under the pen name Charles Summerfield. He also contributed "Sketches of the South and Southwest" to various newspapers. After returning to Texas, Arrington was elected judge of the Twelfth (Rio Grande) Judicial District in 1850. He retired in 1856 because of ill health, returned to New York, and, again under a pen name, published The Rangers and Regulators of the Tanaha, or Life Among the Lawless: A Tale of the Republic of Texas (1857). He went to Chicago to practice law in 1857 and died there on December 31, 1867, leaving three children. His poems were published posthumously under the title Poems of Alfred W. Arrington

Alfred Marmaduke Hobby, merchant, politician, Confederate officer, and poet, son of Martin and Anna Elizabeth (Slade) Hobby, was born in 1836 in Macon, Georgia. In the 1850s his mother, a widow, moved with her sons from Florida to Galveston, Texas. Hobby entered a mercantile partnership and established a general store at the new town of St. Mary's of Aransas, Refugio County, about 1857. Although only about twenty-two, he almost immediately became a political leader of the county. In 1859, upon the resignation of Henry L. Kinney, qv Hobby was elected to the House of Representatives of the Eighth Texas Legislature. He was an ardent supporter of states' rights and organized a chapter of the Knights of the Golden Circle qv at St. Mary's. At the Secession Convention qv he represented his district and voted for secession. qv Hobby was reelected to the Ninth Legislature but resigned to enter Confederate military service. On May 14, 1862, he organized and became major of the force later known as the Eighth (Hobby's) Texas Infantry regiment. While stationed at Galveston during the war, Hobby married Mrs. Gertrude Menard. After the war he disposed of his Refugio County holdings and settled at Galveston, where he resumed the mercantile business. During the war he wrote several patriotic poems. These, including "The Sentinel's Dream of Home," were widely published in newspapers of the period. After the war he devoted himself more seriously to literary work. His best-known prose was his

    Extractions: A group of landscape painters established in Norwich, East Anglia, during the early part of the 19th Century. The Norwich Society was founded at a meeting of the friends, pupils and patrons of John Crome, the landscape painter. Its purpose was 'An Enquiry into the Rise, Progress and present state of Painting, Architecture and Sculpture, with a view to point out the Best Methods of study to attain to Greater Perfection in these Arts.' This group was strong but diverse. It was described as a school only because its leaders, John Crome and John Sell Cotman, operated in Norwich as teachers and drawing masters. Neither their own work, nor that of their pupils, displays a common style, though the artists established close personal and family links. While they concentrated for long periods on Norfolk scenery and life, they also visited and painted Wales and the Lake District, the Netherlands and northern France. They formed strong connections with colleagues at a national level, exhibited and sometimes lived in London, and were often at the forefront of contemporary artistic theory and taste. Even when regionally based, they were never provincial in outlook.
