Extractions: Democritus was born in the city of Abdera which is located in the region of Greece known as Ionia. He and his teacher Leucippus ( LeukippoV ) are believed to have developed the atomic theory which turned out to be strikingly accurate in a sense. In his theory, he postulated the existance of particles called " Atomos " or Atomos which is a Greek word meaning "indivisible". While the particles which are now named after this word, atoms, are certainly not indivisible, energy can be emitted or absorbed only in discrete units called quanta. The field of physics that describes this quantification of energy is appropriately named quantum mechanics. Since the energy never exists at a state in between these quanta, these energy quanta are like the atoms of Democritus in that they are indivisible. He wrote extensively on many subjects, but few of his works remain. He also made many contributions to mathematics which, had they not been lost, may have led to the development of calculus more than a millenium earlier than the time of Sir Isaac Newton. Some of these are on the subjects of numbers, geometry, mappings, irrational numbers, and perhaps most importantly, tangencies. It was the problem in mathematics known as the tangent line problem which led to the development of the most fundamental ideas in calculus. With calculus you can find the slope of a curved line at any point (being curved, it is different at every point) with a process called differentiation. This is done by finding the slope of the tangent line to the curve at that point (A tangent line is a line that meets that curve at exactly one point without crossing it.) using secant lines (crossing the curve at two points) to successively approximate the tangent line.

Democritus certainly visited Athens when he was a young man, principally to visit Anaxagoras , but Democritus complained how little he was known there. He said, according to Diogenes Laertius writing in the second century AD [5]:- I came to Athens and no one knew me. Democritus was disappointed by his trip to Athens because Anaxagoras , then an old man, had refused to see him. As Brumbaugh points out in [3]:- How different he would find the trip today, where the main approach to the city from the northeast runs past the impressive "Democritus Nuclear Research Laboratory". Certainly Democritus made many journeys other than the one to Athens. Russell in [9] writes:- He travelled widely in southern and eastern lands in search of knowledge, he perhaps spent a considerable time in Egypt, and he certainly visited Persia. He then returned to Abdera, where he remained.

He appears to have spent all of his time on scientific and philosophical studies, teaching, and writing some 60 works have been listed. Of his voluminous writings, only a few fragments of his ethical theory remain. But these fragments and the descriptions by other writers of his atomic theory put him among the foremost thinkers of his time. Aristoxenus wrote that Plato wanted to burn all the works of Democritus, but could not do so because the books were already in wide circulation. Failing this, he avoided any mention of Democritus in his own writings. Certainly, Socrates brand of argument might not have fared well against Democritus, who was described by Timon as "the guardian of discourse, a keen witted disputant". Democrituss theory of the atomic nature of the physical world, developed from that of Leucippus, is known only through the works of critics of the theory such as Aristotle and Theophrastus. It resolved the question of how a world evidently in a state of flux could nevertheless have an underlying nature that was eternal and unchanging. By positing infinitely small things that remained the same but formed different combinations with each other, Leucippus initially, and Democritus in greater detail, managed to answer the question in a way that has been subject to increasingly successful elaboration ever since. One can trace the physical theory of atoms through Epicurus, Lucretius, and Galileo to modern times.
