Extractions: Augustus De Morgan was a brilliant mathematician and professor noted for his advances in algebra and logic. He was a friend of Charles Babbage (inventor of the Analytical Engine, forerunner of the modern computer) and he tutored Ada Lovelace, who was the poet Lord Byron's daughter and supposedly wrote the first computer program for Babbage's machine. De Morgan was prolific and wrote such mathematical texts as Elements of Arithmetic Penny Cyclopedia (1838) where he coined the term 'mathematical induction', Trigonometry and Double Algebra (1849), a geometric interpretation of complex numbers, and Formal Logic (1847), one of his most important works. De Morgan was an uncompromising advocate of religious liberty and free expression; while at Trinity College he would not sign required theological forms and was therefore not allowed to continue with his graduate eduation and fellowship. He was a founder, with George Boole, of symbolic logic as it developed in England. He wrote many books and articles, including Trigonometry and Double Algebra and Formal Logic. He is perhaps best known as the creator of De Morgan's Laws: NOT (A AND B) = (NOT A) OR (NOT B)

A practical man of humble beginnings, Morgan devoted his life to creating things that made the lives of other people safer and more convenient. Among his inventions was an early traffic signal, that greatly improved safety on America's streets and roadways. The son of former slaves, Garrett A. Morgan was born in Paris, Kentucky on March 4, 1877. His early childhood was spent attending school and working on the family farm with his brothers and sisters. Garrett Morgan received wide recognition for his outstanding contributions to public safety. Firefighters in many cities in the early 1900's wore the safety helmet and gas mask that he invented, and for which he was awarded a gold medal at the Second International Exposition of Safety and Sanitation in New York in 1914. The gas mask Morgan invented in 1912 ( U.S. 1,113,675 issued in 1914) was during World War I to protect soldiers from chlorine gas fumes. In 1916, Mr. Morgan used his own mask design to rescue men trapped by a gas explosion in a tunnel being constructed under Lake Erie. Following disaster, which killed twenty-one people, the City of Cleveland, Ohio honored Garrett Morgan with a gold medal for his heroic efforts. The person responsible for the stoplight is Garrett Augustus Morgan, Sr., an African-American, who was born in Paris, Kentucky, on March 4, 1877, to Sidney and Elizabeth (Reed) Morgan. Elizabeth Morgan had been a slave freed by the Emancipation Proclamation. She and Sidney had eleven children. Garrett Morgan was the seventh. He spent his early childhood working on the family farm with his sisters and brothers, while attending school. At the early age of 14, he left Kentucky and moved to Cincinnati, Ohio, in search of employment. His education never went beyond elementary school, so he decided to hire a tutor while living in Cincinnati where he worked as a handyman for a wealthy landowner. He wanted to continue his studies in English grammar. Morgan moved to Cleveland, Ohio, in 1895 working for a clothing manufacturer as a sewing machine repairman. During his employment as a repairman, he invented a belt fastener for the sewing machine. bodyOffer(19849) He truly became a businessman in 1907 with the opening of his own sewing equipment and repair shop. He included a tailoring shop in 1909 that employed 32 employees. Morgans new company began to put on the market coats, suits, and dresses.
