His family name was Cryftz, which means ‘Krebs’ in contemporary German or ‘crab’ in English; but he was called after his native town Cues on the Moselle, where he was born in 1401. He attended school in Deventer in the Netherlands run by the Brethren of the Common Life, whose so-called modern way of piety ( devotio moderna ) influenced him deeply. He then studied law at Heidelberg Padua , and Cologne , becoming an expert in canon law. Having practiced law for several years, he studied theology and became a priest. He attended the Council of Basel in 1432 in the name of his bishop. Originally a supporter of Conciliarism, he entered the service of Pope Eugenius IV in 1437 because he considered that only this Pope could guarantee the unity of the church at that time. He was sent as a papal envoy on missions to Constantinople and later to ecclesiastical diets in Germany . Made a cardinal in 1448, he engaged in reforming the monasteries in

He was born in Kues, Germany (hence "of Cusa") to a merchant family, and received his doctorate in canon law from the University of Padua in 1423. After a successful career as a papal legate, he was made a cardinal by Pope Nicholas V in 1448 or 1449, and was named Bishop of Brixen in 1450. His work as bishop was opposed by Archduke Sigismund of Austria; the duke imprisoned Nicholas in 1460, for which Pope Pius II excommunicated Sigismund and laid an interdict on his lands. Nicholas of Cusa was never able to return to his bishopric, however: Sigmund's capitulation in 1464 came a few days after Nicholas's death at Todi in Umbria Nicholas of Cusa was noted for his deeply mystical writings about Christianity , particularly the nature of the Trinity . Many believe he was influenced in this by the work of Thomas a Kempis . He was suspected by some of holding pantheistic beliefs, but his writings were never accused as being heretical .     Extractions: Polish name: Mikolaj Kopernik. Polish astronomer and mathematician who, as a student, studied canon law, mathematics, and medicine at Cracow, Bologna, Rome, Padua, and Ferrara. Copernicus became interested in astronomy and published an early description of his "heliocentric" model of the solar system in Commentariolus (1512). In this model, the sun was actually not exactly the center of the solar system, but was slightly offset from the center using a device invented by Ptolemy known as the equant point. The idea that the Sun was the center of the solar system was not new (similar theories had been proposed by Aristarchus and Nicholas of Cusa), but Copernicus also worked out his system in full mathematical detail. Even though the mathematics in his description was not any simpler than Ptolemy's , it required fewer basic assumptions. By postulating only the rotation of the Earth revolution about the sun and tilt of Earth's rotational axis, Copernicus could explain the observed motion of the heavens. However, because Copernicus retained circular orbits, his system required the inclusion of epicycles. Unfortunately, out of fear that his ideas might get him into trouble with the church, Copernicus delayed publication of them.

He showed such high promise as a boy that at the age of twelve he received a scholarship to study with the Brothers of the Common Life at Deventer in the Lowlands, a mystical group devoted to experiencing unity with God as inspired by a widely influential book of the time, the Imitation of Christ , authored by one of their fellows.
