    Extractions: Additional Information by Michael Alderton Nicknamed ‘2-Gun Cohen,’ Morris Cohen was the only foreigner ever to become a member of the Kuo-mintang, China's ruling party. He received his elementary education at the Jews' Free School in Camden Town, London's East End. The school was a refuge and a means of escape from poverty, educating the pupils in both secular and religious studies. Also to pass through its doors were Barney Barnato, Bud Flanagan, Alfred Marks, Israel Zangwill and Selig Brodetsky. Morris was something of a tear-away and spent some time in reform school. He went to Canada to escape from this lifestyle. Fascinated with the ideas of Chinese revolutionaries, Morris met the famous leader Dr. Sun Yat-Sen in person in Canada whilst he was a young man, becoming his lifel ong admirer. Dr. Sun appointed him his aide decamp, with the rank of colonel, in recognition of his devotion. Procuring weapons and smuggling them into China to aid the fight against corrupt feudal lords. He went armed night and day with two holstered pistols, one on his hip, the other slung about his shoulder, thus earning the nickname of "Two-Gun." This was a result of the following incident. "The bullet that caught me in the left arm had made me think. Supposing it had been my right arm and I carried my gun that side, I'd not have been able to use it. As soon as we got back to Canton I got me a second gun, another Smith and Wesson revolver, and I packed it handy to my left hand. I practised drawing and soon found that I was pretty well ambidextrous one gun came out about as quick as the other."

    Extractions: About the end of 1941, Dr. Immanuel Velikovsky was urging Norman to further his Iraq project. Velikovsky was born in Russia in 1895. His father was, with Herzl, one of the founders of modern political Zionism. Immanuel Velikovsky was a prominent scientist who had put forward the idea that a great natural catastrophe had taken place at the period of the Exodus from Egypt. He then researched this idea and wrote his books “Ages in Chaos” and “Worlds in Collision”. Between 1924 and 1939, he lived in Palestine, but after that he took up residence in the United States. As a result of Velikovsky’s urging, Norman invited a number of people to a meeting at his house. At this meeting, he said that he had reached the stage in this matter where he was no longer willing to proceed entirely on his own initiative, without any other Jewish leaders being willing to share with him in the responsibilities of thinking through the practical plan of action to be pursued.(573H) A few months later, at the beginning of March 1942, Norman wrote a memorandum entitled "The Jews and the Post-War World"(574) which he submitted a few weeks later during a meeting with the State Department. In his memorandum, Norman wrote that as a result of the "racial" policies of "totalitarian" governments, the Jews of Europe would find it very difficult to rehabilitate financially after the war. He felt it might be beneficial if a large proportion of the Jews were to leave Europe, but the difficulty would be in finding a country which would be ready to accept them.(575)

Despite their historic accomplishments, both remain virtually unknown. Their paths had met and we meet them now. ISAAC RUBINOW (1875-1936) b. Gordon, Russia Medical Doctor/Economist/Social Worker. He emigrated to the United States and soon after earned a degree in medicine. But he left his practice within several years, distressed at how our medical system ignored the many without the means for decent care. He switched to economics, which together with his knowledge of medicine, would serve as tools to help reverse the system's insensitivity and disregard. Rubinow insisted that all Americans should enjoy a guarantee of social insurance to provide for human needs "without injury to the man's ego and self-respect."

Recently, however, two important American Jews, Golda Meir and Henrietta Szold, have been given greater attention by scholars. Yet Judah L. Magnes (1877-1948) continues to be overlooked or presented as inconsequential because of "his increasing marginalization in Palestine." As the first Chancellor (and later President) of The Hebrew University in Jerusalem and the leading proponent of the bi-national plan for Palestine, however, Magnes was at the very center of Jewish public life in Mandatory Palestine.
