George was educated in Chicago where he was a student at the Lewis Institute from 1896 to 1902. In 1901 he began a correspondence with Harry Vandiver on a problem in number theory. Together they studied the prime factors of a n b n and later wrote up their work for publication. Graduating from the Lewis Institute in 1902, Birkhoff began his university education. He entered the University of Chicago in 1902, spending a year there, then moved to Harvard University where he studied from 1903 to 1905. While at Harvard he submitted the results he had obtained with Vandiver to the Annals of Mathematics in 1904 and this joint number theory paper became his first publication. Also in 1904 he submitted a paper on analysis to the American Mathematical Society . During these two years at Harvard the teacher who influenced him most was who taught him algebra and classical analysis. Birkhoff was awarded his A.B. by Harvard in 1905 and his A.M. in 1906.

He attended the University of Chicago in 1902-3, then moving to Harvard University from 1903 to 1905. He was awarded his A.B. by Harvard in 1905 and his A.M. in 1906. Birkhoff returned to Chicago in 1905 to study for his doctorate which was awarded in 1907. His thesis was entitled Asymptotic Properties of Certain Ordinary Differential Equations with Applications to Boundary Value and Expansion Problems and his thesis advisor was Eliakim Moore . However, Archibald writes in [5]:- During his two years at Harvard, one in college and one in the graduate school, and Osgood were in their prime; but during the next two years [at Chicago] he worked under Eliakim Moore Bolza and Maschke , in the most inspiring mathematical center in the United States at that time. His dissertation was done quite independently however. Birkhoff taught at Wisconsin Madison at an instructor from 1907 to 1909 when he went to Princeton, becoming a professor there in 1911. In 1912 he moved to Harvard as an assistant professor and he was promoted to full professor there in 1919. In 1936 he became Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Science at Harvard.

Birkhoff was educated at the University of Chicago, where he received his Ph.D. in 1907. He then taught at University of Wisconsin (1907-1909), Princeton (1909-1912), and Harward (1912-1939). He served as president of the American Mathematical Society (1924-26), as dean of the Harvard Faculty of Arts and Sciences (1935-39), and as president of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (1936-37). He was also editor of Annals of Mathematics Transactions of the American Mathematical Society (1920-25), and the American Journal of Mathematics (1943-44). Over the course of his career, Birkhoff was honored with numerous prizes and awards. Birkhoff conducted research mainly in mathematical analysis and analysis applied to dynamics. He formulated the ergodic theorem, which transformed the Maxwell-Boltzmann ergodic hypothesis of the kinetic theory of gases into a rigorous principle. He also investigated linear differential equations and theory of difference equations. Nov. 12, 1944, Cambridge, Mass.), foremost American mathematician of the early 20th century, who formulated the ergodic theorem, which transformed the Maxwell-Boltzmann ergodic hypothesis of the kinetic theory of gases (to which exceptions are known) into a rigorous principle through use of the Lebesgue measure theory. Birkhoff taught at the University of Wisconsin, Madison (1907-09); Princeton University (1909-12); and Harvard University (1912-44). He was an extraordinarily stimulating lecturer and director of research. In the mid-20th century, many of the leading American mathematicians had either written their doctoral dissertations under his direction or had done postdoctoral research with him. He conducted research mainly in mathematical analysis and analysis applied to dynamics. His dissertation and much of his later work dealt with the solutions of ordinary differential equations and the associated expansions of arbitrary functions. Using matrix methods, he also contributed fundamentally to the theory of difference equations. His proof in 1913 of a geometric theorem of Henri topology (the study of surfaces and spaces) was a striking achievement. Birkhoff's formulation of the ergodic theorem (the so-called strong form), which was published shortly before the "weak" formulation of John von Neumann appeared, has important applications to modern analysis and is applicable in more cases than is the weak form. Birkhoff developed his own theory of gravitation after Albert Einstein had developed his, and he constructed a mathematical theory of aesthetics, which he applied to art, music, and poetry. All this internationally renowned creative work stimulated further scientific discoveries.
