Extractions: ABELITES (Haer., lxxxvii.; cf. Praedestinatus, i. 87) as formerly living in the neighborhood of Hippo, but already extinct when he wrote. Their name was derived from Abel, the son of Adam. Each man took a wife, but refrained from conjugal relations, and each pair adopted a boy and a girl who inherited the property of their foster-parents on condition of living together in like manner in mature life. They were probably the remnant of a Gnostic sect, tinged perhaps by Manichean influences. [The name grew out of a wide-spread belief that Abel though married had lived a life of continence.] BIBLIOGRAPHY: C. W. F. One very noticeable face is of a modern, sophisticated city with a cluster of easily identified luxury hotels and shops with logos of well-known designers. On the sands of the Giza Plateau, the majestic Sphinx gazes across the road into the eyes of KFCs Colonel Sanders, and car traffic would strike fear into the heart of the fearless. In the evening, the heat of the day disappears with the cooling breezes from the desert and Cairenes take to the streets to enjoy their city. Families stroll together while pop music, eastern and western, ring out from a distance. Restaurant boats outlined with neon lights ply the Nile and smaller Feluccas , the traditional sailboat of the Nile, are filled with revelers singing and dancing to the loudest decibel possible until the wee hours. Discos normally open around 2:00 a.m., and it might be fair to say that some people never sleep. Very much a part of old Cairo are the Alabaster Mosque at the Citadel, the Coptic Hanging Church, Coptic Museum and Ben Ezra Synagogue. Since the end of the twelfth century, the Citadel was the seat of all the rulers of Egypt. The religious fortress, situated on a dominant hilltop overlooking all of Cairo, was built in 1176 by famed Salah al-Din Yussuf Ibn Ayyub, Muslim sultan of Egypt, Syria, Yemen and Palestine, and better known to European Crusaders as their fierce foe, Saladin. Resonating with todays political climate, it is interesting to note that, as the Britannica buts it, Salah al-Dins every act was inspired by an intense and unwavering devotion to the idea of

Outrora, lamentavelmente dilapidada, a Sinagoga Ben Ezra - uma das mais antigas do Egito e receptáculo da famosa Geniza do Cairo - foi toda reformada, voltando à sua antiga grandeza, pela equipe da arquiteta e preservadora canadense, Phyllis Lambert, natural de Montreal. His secular poetry deals partly with nature and love, but most of it reveals a gloom and bitterness engendered by his tragic life. Orphaned early, he spent much of his life contending with mediocre rivals and critics jealous of his scholarship. It is thought that he was murdered by a rival. Ibn Gabriol's religious poetry is filled with a mystic awe of God, and much of it has been incorporated into the Judaic liturgy. His great philosophical work, The Well of Life, showing the influence of Neoplatonism, was written in Arabic. In its Latin translation ( Fons vitae ), it exercised a great influence on Christian thought.
