In 1883 Barnes' father was appointed Inspector of Schools in Birmingham, a position that he occupied throughout the rest of his working life. Barnes was educated at King Edward's School, Birmingham and in 1893 went up to Cambridge as a Scholar of Trinity College. He was bracketed Second Wrangler in 1896 and was placed in the first division of the first class in Part II of the Mathematical Tripos in 1897. In the following year he was awarded the first Smith's Prize and was duly elected to a Trinity Fellowship. He was appointed a lecturer in mathematics in 1902, junior dean in 1906-08 and a tutor in 1908. He graduated Sc.D. of the University of Cambridge in 1907 and was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1909.

   Extractions: English theologian, Bishop of Birmingham, and accomplished scientist who pondered how to relate Christian doctrines to the possibility of extraterrestrial intelligence (see Christian doctrines and pluralism ). In his Gifford lectures, given in Edinburgh between 1927 and 1929, he expressed the opinion that God created the universe "as a basis for the higher forms of consciousness" and deduced that this purpose is best served by a multiplicity of inhabited worlds. Noting that there appeared to be nothing "exceptional either in mass or in size or in any other way" about our Galaxy and endorsing the view that life on Earth originated as a result of natural biochemical processes, he concluded that there are probably billions of planets in the observable universe supporting intelligent life, some of it far in advance of our own.     Extractions: Ernest Gaines Ernest J. Gaines was born in 1933 on the River Lake plantation in Pointe Coupée Parish, Louisiana, the setting for most of his fiction; he was the fifth generation in his family to be born there. At the age of nine he was picking cotton in the plantation fields; the black quarter's school held classes only five or six months a year. When he was fifteen, Gaines moved to California to join his parents, who had left Louisiana during World War II. There he attended San Francisco State University and later won a writing fellowship to Stanford University. Gaines published his first short story in 1956. Since then he has written eight books of fiction, including Catherine Carmier, Of Love and Dust, Bloodline, The Autobiography of Miss Jane Pittman , A Long Day in November, In My Father's House, and A Gathering of Old Men , most of which are available in Vintage paperback editions. A Lesson Before Dying , his most recent novel, won the 1993 National Book Critics Circle Award. He has also been awarded a MacArthur Foundation grant, for writings of "rare historical resonance." Gaines divides his time between San Francisco and Lafayette, Louisiana, where he is writer in residence at the University of Southwestern Louisiana. He is married to the lawyer Dianne Saulney.
