Extractions: April 24, 2002 What we're talking about today is what happened in Jenin. Why? Because the Security Council - as a result of what can only be described as a blood libel initiated by the Palestinians and the Arabs, but taken up by the international community and the Europeans - as if Israel had carried out a massacre of the Palestinians in Jenin. Since then, of course, we know otherwise. This whole blood libel has basically been unveiled and blown open, and we're hearing that, if at all, we're not talking about 300 or 200, but possibly about 80 people who were killed during the course of the fighting in the Jenin refugee camp - most of whom were armed terrorists. There was certainly no massacre. But, as things happen in the United Nations, this became the subject of a proposal for intervention by the international community. And as a result of our own willingness to prove that we have nothing to hide, and to indicate to the world at large that "here, come and see", we agreed to a fact-finding team by the United Nations to come to the area and collect information on the recent events in the Jenin refugee camp.

This is specifically prohibited in the most recent Security Council resolution adopted after the Sept. 11 bombings in New York in which all states, members of the UN were asked to do everything possible to stop financing terrorism to prevent all the various routes by which monies are transferred. Coming onto the suicide bombings themselves - this is a component of terrorism. The fact that these suicide bombers include, within the actual belts, ball bearings and nails and screws and sharpened pieces of iron, this in itself, without any other context is a very serious violation of all the norms of humanitarian law in the Hague Rules of 1899, those of 1907, and the Geneva Conventions. The use of this type of material to inflict superfluous and unnecessary suffering is simply the most blatant violation of any humanitarian law available. The use of children - it's a crime according to international law. It's detailed in the new international criminal court document as a very serious crime. Children under the age of 17, under the age of 15, using children in any way whatsoever, whether by sending them to commit suicide and blow themselves up or simply using them to hide behind them in order to shoot is something which is forbidden.

Its easy to see why this should be the case. Given the irrationalism, fanaticism and secrecy of the German pre-war occult groups, and the links between them and various members of the Nazi hierarchy, it is easy to see why the subject should be so open to speculation and conjecture. For those more interested in fascism than in the occult the subject would appear to be of little interest. Why should anyone care whether certain high-ranking Nazis worshipped at the altar of Odin or pranced around in silly costumes acting out laughable pagan rites? The answer is that these links to the occult are examples of the underlying revolt of the irrational which were, and which remain, part of the appeal of fascism. This is not just of historical interest. In the US the two leading strands of far-Right ideology Christian Identity and the World Church of the Creator are both driven by what are clearly occult views of the world. In Norway the otherwise risible black metal movement combines paganism, Satanism and fascism. Occult beliefs are a recurrent theme throughout the history of fascism. Alan Bakers Invisible Eagle looks at the background to the German volkish nationalist groups, steeped in neo-paganism, anti-Semitism and an anti-materialism that finds strange echoes in some Green end ecological groups today. Volkish nationalism was an essential component of a semi-fascist sub-culture that gravitated naturally toward National Socialism. It is clear, however, that Baker is not a historian, neither is he an expert in the study of fascism. The historical content is sketchy and largely bolstered by extensive quotes from more scholarly works.

Taken individually, each poem might be found in any good poetry magazine; serious, intelligent, well-crafted work. One might single it out from among less well formed works in such magazines. A poem like THE HERMIT for instance (first two stanzas): Confronted with these twenty four poems - all of which invite praise - a reader may feel less than enthusiastic. Why? Well, in this collection, at least, there is no humour. The most serious poetry, in the hands of certain writers, can contain (and often does) a smile or two - even if they're merely wry. There are, of course, many poets who appeal to the general reader who don't use humour as a craft tool - Ted Hughes being one of them (in his adult poems, at least). What then does Ted Hughes have that Baker does not? - and I speak only of what I find in this first collection. What comes to mind, immediately, is passion - a hands on feel - that pulsates. pushes a poem along to its end. Baker distances himself too much from his subject. This is a writing personality that shows itself to be too earnest, too considered. A collection. however short, needs, not only a variety of subject matter (or varied approaches to the same subject) but a lightness of touch able to highlight the metaphor and imagery. A writer has to let up now and again. For me he is more successful when he uses rhyme - this from THE LOST WEEKENDS:
