Of the details of his life little is known. He studied mathematics at Alexandria under the successors of Euclid . Much of his life was spent in Pergamum. His great work on Conic Sections is dedicated to a certain Eudemus of that city. This work is in eight books, of which, in the time of Descartes, the first four only were known to be extant. Shortly afterwards the fifth, sixth, and seventh books were discovered in their Arabic translationan important discovery, since they reveal mathematical powers which the students of the first four had hardly suspected. Apollonius wrote many other works on mathematical subjects, of which little more than the title has come down to us. In one of these he endeavours, as Archimedes had done, to enlarge and improve the Greek system of numeration. A fragment of another work, on irrational quantities, has been discovered has been discovered in Arabic: and it is possible that others may yet be restored from a similar source. By contemporaries and successors he was spoken of as the Great Mathematician. Apollonius was accused by some of founding his reputation on unacknowledged debts to these great predecessors. That he had studied their works is obvious: not less so is it that he made the subject his own by exhaustive handling, and by original development of it. The names which the Conic Sections now bear are in all probability due to him. Before his time each of the three curves was regarded as resulting from a plane cutting the side of the cone at right angles; and only right cones

Extractions: A few months ago I decided to begin working on a new design based on my spiral tampers . It took some trial and error and the tampers you see below are the result of those experiments . The shape evolves as my technique moves towards the end product of what I had in mind . The whole process was a learning experience , hence the name of the experiment Mathematikos , Greek for "disposed to learn" . Another reason for the name is based on the design itself which is in part inspired by two of histories greatest mathematicians , Archimedes of Syracuse and Apollonius of Perga . The Spiral design is based loosely on the Archimedian Screw , having four flutes which complete one rotation around the cylinder. My dilemma came when I found that I did not like the flat joint of brass and acrylic, wanting instead a movement of brass into acrylic. Once again I looked to the mathematicians for inspiration and found the works on Conic Sections by Apollonius of Perga . 'Conics' deals with the shapes one acquires when slicing a cone . This work would later be used by Kepler in determining the eliptical orbits of the planets . By cutting a precise cone into the brass base and matching it with a mirror image cone on the acrylic inserted into it I am now able to produce a brass base that flows with the spiral design , as shown in the picture above .

Extractions: BC BC Little is known of the life of Apollonius of Perga. When he was a young man, he went to Alexandria where he studied under the followers of Euclid and later he taught there. He was known as "The Great Geometer". His works have had a very great influence on the development of mathematics. In particular his famous book Conics introduced terms which are familiar to us today such as parabola, ellipse and hyperbola. There were 8 books in Conics , but only the first 4 have survived in Greek, and only the first 7 have survived in Arabic. Books 1 to 4 form an elementary introduction to the basic properties of conics. Most of the results in these books were known to Euclid, Aristaeus and others, but some are worked out more fully and generally than in the writings of others. In book 1 the relations satisfied by the diameters and tangents of conics are studied, while in book 2 Apollonius investigates how hyperbolas are related to their asymptotes, and he also studies how to draw tangents to given conics. There are, however, new results in these books in particular in book 3. Books 5 to 7 are highly original. In these Apollonius discusses normals to conics and shows how many can be drawn from a point. He gives propositions determining the center of curvature which lead immediately to the Cartesian equation of the evolute. Pappus gives some indications of the contents of six other works by Apollonius. These are
