His set of books, Conics, introduced us to terms we use in math to day. Apollonius had a huge influence on math and geometry. When Apollonius was young he went to Alexandria, Egypt. In Alexandria he studied under the followers of Euclid. Apollonius later taught in Alexandria. Apollonius visited a university in Pergamum. When he was in Pergamum he met Eudemus of Pergamum and Attalus; who many think may be king Attalus I of Pergamum. Conics gave very little references to Apollonius’s life. By reading this book we have learned that Apollonius introduced geometer Philonides to Eudemus while in Ephesus. His son, Apollonius, took the second edition of Conics from Alexandria to Eudemus in Pergamum. We also know that Apollonius’s book was written in 8 books. The first 4 survived in Greek writing. The first 7 of the 8 books survived in Arabic writing. In Apollonius’s books he explains the curves formed when a plane intersects the surface of a cone. The first two books of Conics are the basics used in geometry.
