Is one of the biggest temple constructed ever after the temple of Solomon in Jerusalem. Sofia is the Greek word for Wisdom. So the Temple is dedicated to the Holy Wisdom of God. It is an enormous and magnificent structure with an extremely large dome which dominates the exterior of the building. The Architectural style of this Byzantine Temple is domed basilica. Its architects were Anthemius from Tralles and Isidorus from Miletus. The Interior construction of the Temple (click here to see intrior picture of Agia Sofia Temple as it is Today) A huge narthex with many entrances is leading us into the center of the Temple. As we enter the main body of the Church, we are confronted by the impressive height and wideness of the dome, which is full of small arched windows. All the windows are around its base which in turn provide a halo of light giving the impression that we entered the Heavens. The dome rests on four pendentives and is then supported by four basic piers on each corner. It is also supported by two half domes on either side. The whole plan becomes a combination of longitudinal and central plans.

As you proceed deep into Ayasofya, the domes seem to billow upward into space , creating their own "heavens." In the Blue Mosque , Mehmet Aga has duplicated the effect on the exterior of the building : as you approach from the front and ascend the stairs toward the courtyard, the domes billow upward until, entering the courtyard, the full grandeur of the exterior is revealed. Sultanahmet 's two great timeless monuments, side by side.... The images below allow you to see some of the effect, but there's nothing like being right there. When you go, be sure to enter the Blue Mosque's enclosure from the west ( Hippodrome ) side . Walk slowly, looking ahead, and watch the

Gr. 1613 The historians Eusebius, Philostorgius and Theodore Anagnostes provide ample information on the "magnificent and wondrous" church of the Holy Apostles, originally built by Constantine the Great. Similarly, Procopius and after him a great number of historians and travellers have written on "the splendid" edifice erected by Justinian. Constantine of Rhodes (lOth century) composed a metrical "Description of the building of theApostles" , dedicating this long poem to Constantine VII Porphyrogenitus, and Nicholas Mesarites (12th century) has given a description, which is however incomplete.
