Toward The Unification Of Mathematics its parts. To people like alexander, alexandroff, and Lefschetz, topologycould be unified into an interdependent system. This new http://www.aug.edu/dvskel/AckerbergHastings1998.htm
Extractions: Mathematicians the world over respected James W. Alexander (1888-1971) for his profound results in combinatorial, or algebraic, topology. A researcher and teacher at Princeton, he extended the work of the mathematicians who had established combinatorial topology as a distinct and specialized field in mathematics by the 1920s. As Solomon Lefschetz (1884-1972) remarked in 1930, "It is largely to [Oswald] Veblen [another algebraic topologist] and Alexander that we owe the . . . present improved situation." Yet, Alexander felt dissatisfied despite his success. He desired to find out whether techniques in point-set topology, the other main type of topology and also fully established as a legitimate, unique mathematical discipline, could lead to new discoveries in combinatorial topology. Could the two topologies be unified into one whole topology that encompassed more than the separate parts? In this manner, topologists of the 1920s began a process of fusion in their field. By the 1950s, they had so successfully unified topology that this discipline was viewed as a fundamental branch of mathematics, on the level of algebra and geometry. Historians have tended to understand this development of increasingly sophisticated techniques for use throughout mathematics as a purely progressive process. Yet, topology is a human activity like any other and should also be viewed as a part of twentieth-century culture. In fact, the development of topology fits well into conceptual frameworks of the twentieth century, such as the model established by Hamilton Cravens and Alan Marcus. These historians believe that intellectual similarities can be found across disciplines around the globe during given time periods.

Bardeen recounts his early career: undergraduate education in electrical engineering, work in geophysics while employed by the Gulf Oil Company in Pittsburgh, the math Ph.D. program at Princeton, and Junior Fellow of the Society of Fellows at Harvard. He talks about Eugene Wigner, John Van Vleck, and John Slater as pioneers of solid-state physics. Bardeen describes his years at Princeton and the close relationship between the mathematics and physics departments in those years. The Princeton Mathematics Community in the 1930s Transcript Number 2 ( VALENTINE BARGMANN (with ALBERT TUCKER) This is an interview of Valentine Bargmann at Princeton University on 12 April 1984. The interviewers are William Aspray and Albert Tucker. Bargmann tells of his immigration to the United States in 1937. He became a member of the Institute for Advanced Study and worked as an assistant to Einstein. Bargmann talks about the relationship between mathematicians and physicists at Princeton and elsewhere, and about his wartime work. In 1948 he accepted a tenured position in the physics department at Princeton. Bargmann and Tucker describe conditions in Princeton in the 1930s and talk about von Neumann, Einstein, Milton White, and others.

März 1882 in Erlangen geboren. Der Vater, Prof. Dr. Max Noether, ist Professor für Mathematik an der Universität; die Mutter ist Ida Noether, geb. Kaufmann.
