He attended Iowa State University and received a civil engineering degree in 1912. In 1914, as a designer for the Marsh Engineering Company, he was responsible for the design of the Tidal Basin Bridge in Washington, D.C. and the K Street Freeway. He studied bridge design at the University of London in 1921. After several years as a design engineer he and George Higbee, a former university classmate, formed a general contracting business which specialized in the design and construction of steel and concrete bridges. The engineering firm constructed major development projects across the United States. Starting in Iowa, their construction firm built
Extractions: T he first time I read a story by Alexander Irvine, I thought, here is a writer with a devious and logical mind. The story was "Akhenaten," in which the pharaoh with the spindly arms and elongated head turns out to be a visitor from the distant future, a temporal alien who wins the love of Amenhotep's wife Tiye, succeeds Amenhotep to the throne of Egypt, and imposes the worship of Aten, the sun-god, on his adopted land. As an explanation of Akhenaten's anomalous monotheistic reign, Irvine's version makes considerable sense. Why not, I found myself thinking. According to Akhenaten's supposedly realistic statues, he looked more like something from Close Encounters than your average Egyptian. Who knows, it could have happened that way. In A Scattering of Jades Irvine does again what he has done so well in his stories: rewrite history, or rather write the strange truth behind a history we think we know. This time the year is 1843, the place is New York City, and the history is as American as apple pie. But in Irvine's America, Aaron Burr conspires with his financial backer Harman Blennerhassett and an itinerant showman named Riley Steen to revive the Aztec god Tlaloc, whose return will bring about the time of the Sixth Sun, in which sacrificial fires will once again burn to the gods and the conspirators will rule an American empire. According to Burr's research in the archives of the Tammany Society, to revive Tlaloc the conspirators must locate a

Extractions: Alexander C. Irvine, A Scattering of Jades (Tor Books, 2002) When an author like Charles de Lint endorses no, sings the praises of a first novel, we here at GMR take notice. As one of our best fantasy authors today, de Lint is in a position to know what hes talking about, and while he uses Tim Powers as a touchstone for describing Alexander Irvines style, he is quick to note that Irvine has his own unique voice in story-telling. Indeed he does. A Scattering of Jades is a remarkable debut novel, combining secret historical conspiracies, magic, adventure, Aztec mythology, and tons of action to give readers a jolting ricochet ride. Irvine puts together a plot so gripping you may need to borrow the local Fire Departments Jaws of Life to pry yourself free! The multiple subplots provide the reader with plenty of fuel for takeoff into the imaginary realms. Since Irvine uses actual American history as a backdrop for much of his story, as well as authentic Native American myths, the most unlikely scenarios within the plot seem unbelievably credible. The story begins in a New York City tenement building basement in 1841, and stays true to the historic atmosphere. There are sawdust-floored saloons, demonstrating abolitionists, traveling medicine men with wagons full of mysterious elixirs, and colonies of Dickinsonian street urchins. Irvines characters are a delightful stew of the bizarre and quirky, mixing actual persons such as Edgar Allen Poe, P.T. Barnum and Aaron Burr with a fictitious street gang called the Dead Rabbits, a snake-oil-salesman/puppeteer, and a kidnapped girl disfigured according to the rites of an ancient Aztec ritual. There is a whole slew or at least a partial pantheon of Mesoamerican gods. Toss in a midget henchman who bites peoples ears off, and a deity known as Meskansisal, the Mask Bearer, who manifests as a talking bear. Add a pinch of the reanimated dead, and a pair of very human heroes: Archie, the father of the runaway girl, and Stephen, a guide at the newly discovered Mammoth Caves in Kentucky who is also a slave seeking freedom. Everyone in this novel wants something, but whatever each individual seeks is inextricably intertwined with the fates of all the others.

Irvine (often bylined as Alex Irvine) has gathered quite a bit of well-deserved notice for his short fiction over the last couple of years. This makes his first novel, A Scattering of Jades , one of the most anticipated debuts of the year. To some extent, it satisfies: indeed it may be the best first SF novel I've seen this year. On the other hand, it's not by any means a complete success: suffice it to say that I'm still excited about Irvine's potential, but I don't feel he has reached that potential in this novel. A Scattering of Jades is firmly in Tim Powers territory. It's a fantasy cum secret history dealing with obscure gods and magic impinging on the life of an ordinary man. The man ends up injured, just as most of Powers' heroes, and he must make a desperate journey, trusting implausible forces, to save a loved one. In this case, the gods are mostly Aztec gods, particularly Tlaloc, with a leavening of Lenni Lenape gods. And the "secret history" is of the United States, dealing with Aaron Burr's mad ambitions and their aftermath, and more directly with the most horrible blot on U.S. history: slavery.

Well in my opinion, no one deserves to die of something that can't be cured. All his loved ones are in pain right now. I notice I am very mad all the time ..... then I'll be happy. I take it out on my brother and sister. I don't mean to do that... But sometimes I hurt so much I don't even notice what I am doing. My uncle said he would take us to Rome, Paris, and Germany for my sister's, brother's and my graduation. For me, that's in two years. He's not going to be here when I graduate, which means he won't be here for their graduation either. I find it hard to talk about it with anyone face to face. I think it's easier to write. My uncle always had some advice for me. He told me to follow my dreams, and that if I wanted to sing, I should sing. I sang in front of my whole school for him. I know no one really wants someone they love to die... I send everyone else who is grieving my best wishes and hope you are all getting through this.

Its biggest boast on that front is that Bob Montana, creator of the Archie comic strips, grew up here. ADVERTISEMENT Lately, though, art has been making a stand in Haverhill, where an arts district started with a piece of paper Michael LaFosse folded into the shape of an F-14 Tomcat fighter plane. LaFosse and his business partner, Richard Alexander, were industrial trainers specializing in chemical and environmental management. But LaFosse had a knack for paper-folding, and Alexander videotaped him making the Tomcat. The two consultants began to think there might be a market out there for origami. They were right. Alexander and LaFosse opened Origamido as far as they know, the only for-profit origami studio in the world in November 1996, in the storefront of an old shoe factory on an otherwise desolate Wingate Street. ''There was nothing on this street," Alexander recalls. But the city had a little money to open a local arts council, and LaFosse was active on the Mayor's Council on the Arts. Soon, the Pentucket Arts Center set up shop next door. The next to come, according to Alexander, was The Peddler's Daughter, an Irish pub below street level on Wingate, which along with hearty gourmet fare serves up traditional Irish meals like bangers and mash, and warm, crumbling brown bread just like in the old country.

Submitted: June 15, 1998 Decided and Filed: June 25, 1998 Before: MERRITT, BOGGS, and SUHRHEINRICH, Circuit Judges. COUNSEL ON BRIEF: Archie I. Floyd, Jr., Orient, Ohio, pro se. Charles L. Wille, OFFICE OF THE ATTORNEY GENERAL, Columbus, Ohio, for Appellee. OPINION MERRITT, Circuit Judge. Pro se petitioner Archie Floyd appeals the district court's dismissal of his second application for federal habeas corpus relief brought pursuant to 28 U.S.C. § 2254. For the reasons discussed below, we affirm the judgment of the district court. In July 1987, Floyd pled guilty to one count of burglary and was sentenced to a term of five to fifteen years to run concurrently with a term imposed for parole violation. A little over a month later, the trial judge entered a nunc pro tunc order amending the sentence to a four to fifteen year term to run consecutively to the sentence for the parole violation. The trial judge entered the nunc pro tunc order to comply with Ohio Rev. Code Ann. § 2929.41(B)(3), which requires that a sentence for a new offense be served consecutively to a sentence for parole violation. The nunc pro tunc order was entered without resentencing petitioner Floyd in open court, in apparent violation of Ohio Criminal Rule 43. A sentence is considered void if it does not conform to the appropriate statutory requirements. The sentencing court, however, retains jurisdiction to reimpose a sentence after a void order and may do so by use of a nunc pro tunc entry.
