Extractions: Carl Mahoney and Associates (CMA) is a multidisciplinary consultancy founded on the broadbased experience of Carl Mahoney and his proven ability to design and manage many types of projects with cross-disciplinary and cross-cultural components at all scales. Projects within the scope of CMA's work in national development and planning, or to improve the effectiveness of public or private organizations, are always likely to be complex. Some of them involve the interweaving of economic, social, physical and environmental threads which must be brought together as a whole. The only way to successfully implement the planning, design and execution of a complex project is by using a multidisciplinary team, which in itself is a special art. A team must be individually designed to suit the project at hand, which inevitably requires its own unique set of skills. So at CMA specialist team members are contracted on a project basis. Carl Mahoney's experience has produced methodologies which work extremely well for welding together experts with widely diverging specialties who may not have worked together before into a single functional unit. Extractions: We believe that learning in the classroom, in the laboratory or studio, and in the community contribute to an urbanist's education. Are you interested in why cities sprawl, in urban politics, in how to better serve residents of inner-city neighborhoods, in how people in developing countries can meet basic needs as well as move into the global information economy? If so, you should consider a degree in City and Regional Planning at Cornell. What makes CRP different? Our interests ...We study and learn about cities and regions - the way they function (or don't function) for the people who live and work in them. Since the world's population is rapidly urbanizing, we need citizens and planning professionals with a sophisticated understanding of how and why cities and regions develop as they do. Our approach to teaching ...We believe that learning in the classroom, in the laboratory or studio, and in the community contribute to an urbanist's education. We provide opportunities to learn through internships and in hands-on workshops with real world clients as well as in the classroom. Two recent examples of student "off-campus" learning include participation in historic preservation activities on the famous Ellis Island in New York Harbor, and in an environmental justice workshop with planners in Harlem and the South Bronx in New York City, and the Ironbound section of Newark, New Jersey.

Sources of Additional Information Urban and regional planners, often called community or city planners, develop programs to provide for growth and revitalization of urban, suburban, and rural communities and their regions. Planners help local officials make decisions on social, economic, and environmental problems. Planners usually devise plans outlining the best use of a community's land-where residential, commercial, recreational, and other human services should take place. Planners also are involved in various other planning activities, including social services, transportation, and resource development. They address such issues as central city redevelopment, traffic congestion, air pollution, and the impact of growth and change on an area. They formulate capital improvement plans to construct new school buildings, public housing, and sewage systems. Planners are involved in environmental issues including pollution control, wetland preservation, and landfills. Planners also help find solutions to social issues such as the needs of an aging population, sheltering the homeless, and meeting the demand for drug and alcohol treatment centers, correctional facilities, and abortion and AIDS patient clinics.

Sources of Additional Information Significant Points Download the PDF Nature of the Work About this section Top Planners develop long- and short-term land use plans to provide for growth and revitalization of urban, suburban, and rural communities, while helping local officials make decisions concerning social, economic, and environmental problems. Because local governments employ the majority of urban and regional planners, they are often referred to as community, regional, or city planners. Planners examine proposed community facilities such as schools to be sure these facilities will meet the changing demands placed upon them over time. They keep abreast of economic and legal issues involved in zoning codes, building codes, and environmental regulations. They ensure that builders and developers follow these codes and regulations. Planners also deal with land use issues created by population movements. For example, as suburban growth and economic development create more new jobs outside cities, the need for public transportation that enables workers to get to these jobs increases. In response, planners develop transportation models for possible implementation and explain their details to planning boards and the general public.
