On average, thunderstorms are reported at the Hong Kong Observatory in 5 days per month during April to September. Most thunderstorms form in cumulonimbus cloud. A cumulonimbus cloud typically covers an area of a few kilometres in diameter with a vertical extent of ten kilometres or more, like a tower hanging in the sky. The typical life span of a cumulonimbus cloud is a couple of hours. In the vicinity of active weather systems such as low pressure troughs, cumulonimbus clouds may form one after another. Such thunderstorms are more widespread and persistent. Occasionally, cumulonimbus clouds merge to form severe thunderstorms called supercells. On a summer day that sets off with fine weather, insolation may trigger the growth of cumulonimbus clouds and the formation of thunderstorms. Such thunderstorms are often localized and short lived. The weather may even be sunny not far away from the storms. Sometimes, the cumulonimbus clouds will drift with the wind and affect other areas. The areas of formation of the clouds may also vary with time. Thunderstorms are characterized by flashes of lightning and claps of thunder. In an unstable and moist atmosphere, water droplets and ice pellets in the cloud will become electrically charged in convective motion. When the electric field arising from the piling up of charges reaches a certain breakdown value, lightning discharges take place between clouds or between cloud and the earth's surface. The explosive expansion of the surrounding air produces the rolling sound of thunder. As a rule of thumb, if the sound of thunder reaches an observer three seconds after a lightning flash, the thunderstorm is about one kilometre away from the observer. The distance of thunderstorms for different time delay of the thunder sound can be estimated similarly.

The by-products of this process are the clouds, precipitation, and wind that we associate with the thunderstorm. Atmospheric Conditions for a Thunderstorm Development All thunderstorms, whether or not they become severe, must have three conditions present in order to form. The first necessary condition is moisture in the lower to mid levels of the atmosphere. As air rises in a thunderstorm updraft, moisture condenses into small water drops which form clouds (and eventually precipitation). When the moisture condenses, heat is released into the air, making it warmer and less dense than its surroundings. The added heat allows the air in the updraft to continue rising. The second necessary condition is instability . If the airmass is unstable, air which is pushed upward by some force will continue upward. An unstable airmass usually contains relatively warm (usually moist) air near the earth's surface and relatively cold (usually dry) air in the mid and upper levels of the atmosphere. As the low-level air rises in an updraft, it becomes less dense than the surrounding air and continues to rise. This process is often augmented by added heat due to condensation as discussed above. The air will continue to move upward until it becomes colder and more dense than its surroundings.

These clouds normally form on warm, sunny days, although they are sometimes found on a cold front if conditions are right for their formation. Moist air near the Earth's surface is warmed by the sun, and as the air becomes warmer it starts to rise. As it rises it cools, and, if cooled sufficiently, cumulus clouds form at the condensation level. These small, white puffy clouds grow larger and larger as more warm air rises from the ground. If the cloud gets large enough, the top may penetrate the stratosphere, where the air is cooler. Strong winds in the stratosphere blow the top of the cloud downwind, and this gives the top of the cloud an anvil shape. Not all cumulonimbus clouds bring thunderstorms; some just bring heavy showers or hail. On average, an individual cumulonimbus cloud takes only one hour to take shape, grow and dissipate. It produces less than 30 minutes of thunder and lightning. If a thunderstorm lasts longer than this, it is probably because there is more than one cumulonimbus present.

Although all thunderstorms produce lightning, that is a danger itself, not all of them are "severe" or likely to produce damage. In Australia, Severe Thunderstorms are defined as those that produce any of the following: Each year, upwards of 100 thunderstorms in NSW and the ACT are strong enough to produce one or more of these effects. The chart below shows the number of reported severe thunderstorms from the period July 1988 through to June 2001. Statistics are shown in Financial years (i.e. from 1 July to 30 June the following year) because the peak months for storms occurrence are December and January, the middle of the Financial year. The differences between years are due to two factors. Firstly, the broad weather patterns that cause storms vary from year-to-year resulting in some seasons being more active. And secondly, despite the Bureau's extensive network of observation sites and a storm spotter network of around 1,300 individuals, severe thunderstorms still go unreported in the State, particularly over more remote areas. The graph below shows the percentage frequency of severe thunderstorms for each month of the year for a ten year period. There is a marked tendency for severe thunderstorms (indeed all thunderstorms) to occur during the months September through to March. This period is normally referred to as the "Severe Thunderstorm Season" in NSW. The increase in storms during this period is primarily due to the increase in energy provided by the sun during the warmer Spring and Summer months, coupled with Spring and Summer weather patterns that are favourable for storm growth.
