    Extractions: Taxonomy, cultivars. The cultivated fig, Ficus carica L., is a member of the Moraceae (mulberry family). Other important fruit-bearing species include the mulberries ( Morus spp .), Breadfruit ( Artocarpus altilis Fosb.), Jackfruit ( Artocarpus heterophyllus Lam.), and several tropical Ficus species produce edible fruit for local consumption and wildlife. Other Ficus species of importance - F. elastica ("rubber plant") and F. benjamina (Ficus tree or weeping fig); important indoor foliage plants; the latter is used as a hedge or landscape tree in tropical areas. 4 types of cultivars: 1. Caprifig. "Male", but actually bears both staminate and pistillate flowers. Inedible; used to pollinate Smyrna and San Pedro types; grown outside the orchard, picked prior to wasp emergence, and hung in baskets in trees. 2. Smyrna fig. Requires pollination for fruit set, but wasp does not oviposit in fruit, styles too long. One main crop/yr, the "second" crop; first crop is very light, only a few fruits/tree. 'Calimyrna' is the only Smyrna cultivar grown in California, and is the most widely produced cultivar.

    Extractions: Mark Isaak Scientific names of organisms are not usually known for their entertainment value. They are indispensable for clarity in communication, but most people skip over them with barely a glance. Here I collect those names that are worth a second look. Some names are interesting for what they are named after (for example, Arthurdactylus conandoylensis Godzillius ), some are puns ( La cucaracha Phthiria relativitae ), and some show other kinds of wordplay (such as the palindromic Orizabus subaziro ). Some have achieved notability through accident of history, and many show the sense of humor of taxonomists. The names which are recent additions to this collection will be shown in a brighter shade of red. (How recent depends on how often I update. I'll try to keep the newest names distinctive for about a month.) Rules for assigning scientific names have become well codified in order to keep the names internationally unambiguous and understandable. The full set of rules is rather involved, but the most important parts are fairly simple: Binomial - A genus name is one word. A species name is the genus plus a second word. Subspecies have a trinomial name. A subgenus is occasionally given in parentheses after the genus, thus:

    Extractions: Marianne Riofrio Gourds have been cultivated for thousands of years by many cultures worldwide, including Native Americans, for their usefulness as utensils, storage containers, and as ornaments. Gourds are related to melons, squash, pumpkins, and cucumbers, all members of the Cucurbitaceae or Cucumber family. There are three types of gourds covered in this fact sheet: the cucurbita, or ornamental gourds; the lagenaria, which encompass the large, utilitarian gourds; and the luffa, or vegetable sponge. The cucurbita include the colorful, variously-shaped ornamental gourds often used in fall arrangements. Plants of this group produce large orange or yellow blossoms that bloom in the daytime. The lagenaria group includes the Martin or Birdhouse, Bottle and Dipper gourds. These plants produce white blossoms that bloom at night. Lagenaria gourds are green on the vine, turning brown or tan, with thick, hard shells when dry. Luffas have an outer shell that is easily removed to expose a tough, fibrous interior that can be used as a sponge. Luffas produce prolific vines with yellow blossoms and require the longest growing season of all the gourds. Contents of This Chapter Following the 1948 Convention of the American Psychological Association, B S Bloom took a lead in formulating a classification of "the goals of the educational process". Three "domains" of educational activities were identified. The first of these, named the Cognitive Domain, involves knowledge and the development of intellectual attitudes and skills. (The other domains are the Affective Domain and the Psychomotor Domain, and need not concern us here). Eventually, Bloom and his co-workers established a hierarchy of educational objectives, which is generally referred to as Bloom's Taxonomy , and which attempts to divide cognitive objectives into subdivisions ranging from the simplest behaviour to the most complex. It is important to realise that the divisions outlined above are not absolutes and that other systems or hierarchies have been devised.
