His father, Ivan, was the director of the local gymnasium, and his mother, Marya , (born Marya Korniliev ) came from a family that had introduced glass and paper making to Siberia . Ivan died when Dimitri was quite young and Marya had to return to work in order to support her family. Through family connections, she managed the Korniliev glass factory at Aremziansk Dimitri was educated at the gymnasium in Tobolsk , where he showed great interest in mathematics and physics. He also learned a lot about glass and glass blowing from the family factory. His brother-in-law, Bessargin , was also an influence in that he taught the young Mendeleev current science topics. By the age of fourteen, Dimitri showed great scientific promise and his mother was determined that he should receive a good education. Extractions: T The era spans a major change in the kind of elements being discovered. Hafnium (discovered in 1923) and rhenium (in 1925) were the last elements with stable nuclei to be added to the periodic table. Beginning with technetium, discovered in 1937, the new elements are radioactive in all of their isotopes. All but one of them were "discovered" shortly after they were artificially produced through nuclear transmutation reactions, although some, such as neptunium and plutonium, were later found also to occur in nature. With the discovery of hafnium, element 72, the then-new field of atomic physics was becoming crucial to the discovery of new elements. Although not a rare element, hafnium was nearly impossible to distinguish chemically from the much more common element zirconium. Dutch physicist Dirk Coster and Hungarian chemist George Karl von Hevesy used Neils Bohr's theory of how electrons fill shells and subshells within atoms to predict differences in the two elements' X-ray spectra. They then demonstrated that they could detect X-rays from both elements in a sample of a zirconium-rich ore. They named the element after Bohr's hometown of Copenhagen (Hafnia in Latin).

After his father went blind and could no longer support the family, Mendeleevís mother started a glass factory to help make ends meet. But just as Mendeleev was finishing high school, his father died and the glass factory burned down. With most of her other children now out on their own, his mother took her son to St. Petersburg, working tirelessly and successfully to get him into college. In the late 1860s, Mendeleev began working on his great achievement: the periodic table of the elements. By arranging all of the 63 elements then known by their atomic weights, he managed to organize them into groups possessing similar properties. Where a gap existed in the table, he predicted a new element would one day be found and deduced its properties. And he was right. Three of those elements were found during his lifetimeógallium, scandium, and germanium. They provided the strongest support for his periodic table, a cornerstone both in chemistry and in our understanding of how the universe is put together.
