Extractions: Surveying in the Early Midwest "Surveying is the art of determining the relative positions of prominent points and other objects on the surface of the ground and making a graphical delineation of the included area. The general principles on which it is conducted are in all instances the same; certain measures are made on the ground and corresponding measures are protracted on paper, on a scale which is fixed at whatever fraction of the natural scale may be most appropriate in each instance. The method of operation varies with the magnitude and importance of the survey, which may embrace a vast empire or be restricted to a small plot of land. All surveys rest primarily on linear measures for direct determinations of distance; but these are usually largely supplemented by angular measures, to enable distances to be deduced by the principles of geometry which cannot be conveniently measured over the surface of the ground where it is hilly or broken." A surveying technician assists professional surveyors in performing subdivision design, property and topographic surveys, establishing control for aerial surveying, preparing legal descriptions and controlling construction projects. In the classroom, laboratory and field, we introduce students to the fundamentals of surveying, equipment usage, graphics (both manual and computerized), subdivision planning, control surveys, global positioning principles, subdivision design and legal principles of boundary location. The graduate will have theoretical background and strong practical applications experience. Upon completion of the surveying major, graduates are qualified to work in the following areas: establishing land boundaries, researching deeds, drafting, land

SURVEYING MOLECULAR INTERACTIONS WITH DOT San Diego Supercomputer Center surveying Molecular Interactions With DOT. Lynn F. Ten Eyck(1) teneyckl@sdsc.edu Jeffrey Mandell(1) mandell@sdsc.edu. http://www.sdsc.edu/CCMS/Papers/DOT_sc95.html
Extractions: La Jolla, CA 92037 molecular interactions, convolutions, parallel applications The purpose of the molecular interaction program DOT (Daughter of Turnip) is rapid computation of the electrostatic potential energy between two proteins or other charged molecules. DOT exhaustively tests all six degrees of freedom, rotational and translational, and produces a grid of approximate interaction energies and orientations. It is able to do this because the problem is cast as the convolution of the potential field of the first molecule and any rotated charge distribution of the second. The algorithm lends itself to both parallelization and vectorization, permitting huge increases in computational speed over other methods for obtaining the same information. For example, a complete mapping of interactions between plastocyanin and cytochrome c was done in eight minutes using 256 nodes of an Intel Paragon. DOT is expected to be particularly useful as a rapid screen to find configurations for more detailed study using exact energy models.

Editorial Index Surveying surveying. ISSUE November 1998. Wendy Woodbury Straight has been the owner of Woodbury surveying in Dunkirk, NY, for the past 15 years. http://www.cenews.com/edsurvey1198.html
Extractions: by Wendy J. Woodbury Straight, L.S. The client's request for surveyor certification has been with us for a long time. "I hereby certify" may be found on map drawings from the early nineteenth century, when American settlement was expanding throughout the 13 colonies and well beyond their borders. The post-Revolutionary land speculator was the precursor to a modern developer, and his or his company's certification frequently stated that each copy of the drawing was, in fact, a reproduction of the original. The drawing may have also been notarized by another man, attesting to the identity of the first certifier. As land surveying became a profession, with state-by-state licensing requirements, it was the surveyor who became responsible for the drawing certificate. In the late twentieth century, however, it is not simply the authenticity of a copy or the proof of the surveyor's existence that the client always requests. If surveyors are not cautious, they may be asked to certify in language that results in unplanned liability exposure, involves uninsurable express warranties, or speaks to conditions beyond their knowledge or control. The interests of other parties wanting the surveyor's signature can be different from the professional's interest in serving the client. In spite of traps in which surveyors may place themselves, there is nothing inherently wrong with providing a certification. Though the word "certify" carries the meaning that something is assured or guaranteed, not all forms of certification are such absolute statements.
