The principles behind the standard, and the practice of offering and operating the standard, are what make the standard Open. Open Standards are available for all to read and implement. Open Standards create a fair, competitive market for implementations of the standard. They do not lock the customer in to a particular vendor or group. Open Standards are free for all to implement, with no royalty or fee. Certification of compliance by the standards organization may involve a fee. Open Standards and the organizations that administer them do not favor one implementor over another for any reason other than the technical standards compliance of a vendor's implementation. Certification organizations must provide a path for low and zero-cost implementations to be validated, but may also provide enhanced certification services. Implementations of Open Standards may be extended, or offered in subset form. May 21, 2004 Posted by hmkoltz Filed under: CSS Patrick Griffiths points out a few flaws with those thinking that tables are easier for layout than Cascading Style Sheets (CSS), in his entry, Tables My Ass One myth is that CSS is 'hard'. It isn't hard. Well, not any more difficult than any other approach. The problem is that experienced web designers started out by using tables for layout and then had to completely change their approach to do things the CSS way. In the comments following this piece is a nice resource for form layout, which shows tables may not be necessary when designing forms. Cameron Adams, offers up his Accessible, stylish form layout (24 March 2004) which includes a link to Form Layout Templates an experiment and tool to show how forms can be manipulated into columns and orientations with CSS. We expect reusable, interoperable building blocks to help create a thriving mobile robot industry. The RETF is not a research group nor is it attempting to demo a specific mobile robot scenario. The RETF defines specifications for software building blocks. While the focus is on software, some specifications identify key hardware features or instances of compatible hardware (e.g. actuators, sensors, motors, or communication interfaces). Some building blocks are software only with no need to specify hardware. The RETF produces and maintains the specifications. Individuals produce and maintain their own implementations. The RETF observes working implementations as validation of the specifications. The RETF encourages implementations to be open source, but individuals writing code determine the fate of their own work. Working code and rough consensus guide decisions to work on particular building blocks and to resolve differences of technical opinions about those building blocks.
