    Extractions: Soil means different things to different people. Earth scientists see soil as mineral or organic material that is formed on Earth's surface by dynamic, complex processes. Engineers think of soil as material to build on and are concerned with moisture conditions and the ability of soil to become compacted and hold weight. Agriculturalists think of soil as the top 15-30 cm of Earth's surface to grow crops, while others think of soil as dirt which one plays in or gets "dirty" from. Soil scientists, or pedologists, are primarily interested in the way the five soil forming factors (parent material, climate, topotgraphy, organisms, and time) affect the properties of the soil in its natural, undisturbed state. However, Forensic Geologists study soil that has been disturbed or moved during human activity, to solve crimes. Forensic Geologists obtain soil samples from crime scenes and other sites in question where soil may have been transported, by vehicle or by foot perhaps, and are suspect. Soil characteristics are diverse and this diversity enables Forensic Geologists to use soils as evidence in criminal investigations. Soil formation and the properties of the soil are the result of five key factors: parent material: The material from which the soil is formed. Soil parent material could be bedrock, organic material, an old soil surface, or a deposit from water, wind, glaciers, volcanoes, or material moving down a slope.

Research at Kansas State University into a process known as plant-based bioremediation is showing that an answer to hazardous waste cleanup could be helped by something as simple as planting a tree. "Essentially, bioremediation is using organisms to clean up contaminants," said Larry Davis, professor of biochemistry. "Usually it means bacteria or fungi-emphasizing plants which are present in the root zone." The vegetation serves as a pump bringing contaminated water close to the surface. Depending on the type of chemical present, bacteria on the plant roots can feed on some types of chemicals, while other chemicals are brought closer to the surface, which can hasten their degradation because oxygen is present.

    Extractions: Today's society often times focuses on sensational news and short term crises which surround us. By constantly dwelling in the present, many people ignore the long term problems that compound slowly until they reach a crisis level, and may then be very difficult or impossible to correct. Soil erosion is a continuing long term problem. Natural processes such as the production of soil occur at an alarmingly slower rate than soil can be lost. It is estimated that over 3 billion metric tons of soil are eroded off of our fields and pastures each year by water erosion alone. When fertile soil is removed, along with it go the nutrients and organic matter which are significant to the growth of plants and crops. Without this soil, plants and crops will not survive. Thus, it's easy to see that a reduction in this protective cover will only expose more soil to the detrimental effects of wind and water erosion. This tutorial describes erosion processes as well as ways to predict and control erosion. The history and purpose of the Water Erosion Prediction Project (WEPP) are also included.
