Extractions: (Homily for Second Sunday of Easter) Once someone asked me if I find it hard being a priest today when people are so skeptical. I answered, To be honest, I wish they were more skeptical!* A recent case in point is The DaVinci Code . The novel is great fun. I enjoyed it immensely.** However, the problem is that some (including the author) have taken seriously its account of Christian origins. As I was listening to the audio book, I found myself asking: How can people fall for this stuff? For sure the novel is exciting and it does confirm many current prejudices. I just hope readers will not stop with Dan Brown. So much more awaits the person who wants to know the rest of the story.*** In todays Gospel we see a man who is the patron saint of skeptical inquiry. When met with an astonishing claim, he asked for evidence. He even devised a reasonable test, Unless I see It was not enough that the claim sounded good. Thomas was a plain, honest man. He wanted the truth. God loves honest skeptics, especially folks who are willing to be skeptical about their own selves. We need people who recognize that what matters is not whether they are right but whether they open themselves to the truth. Thomas was such a man. And it led him not to smugness, but worship: My Lord and my God.

Extractions: CAUS Update On this Saturday, CAUS again shares with you some very interesting insights into the interaction with this other intelligence we generically refer to as the "UFO phenomenon." But first a question posed by a member..."Why is it that all of the instruments seeking intelligent life in the universe are pointed away from Earth?" 1) Anne E. Corwin (brightmoon1@juno.com) writes: Some theories and assertions prove to be unsupported, while others turn out to have been revelations about the workings of the Universe. True science has no political agenda. It tries to deal in facts. It does not seek to mislead anybody. Every human is invited to read and investigate the vast body of research that has been handed down from the ranks of the brilliant, grizzled university researchers, from the tireless anthropologists, from the astronomers. The trouble is that people are not willing to wait. They want a quick explanation, and one that does not go beyond what they already understand owing to their education and interests. The adherents of the Heaven's Gate cult really believed that when they left their "containers" (bodies) they would join the Mother Ship trailing the Hale-Bopp comet. David Koresh and his followers really believed that David was in direct communication with God. 3 out of 5 persons are vulnerable to hypnotic persuasion and suggestion. Given these facts, would it really benefit humans as a whole to start taking seriously EVERY claim of the paranormal or supernatural?
Extractions: Interesting article on "Intelligent Design Theory and Neocreationism" in the September Issue of the Skeptical Inquirer . It is a critique of intelligent design and neocreationsim (whatever that is?) and an argument for natural selection. I am no scientist but the author uses human's fallen nature and the problem of evil as a trump card to rule out a supernatural intelligent design. If an omniscient and omnibenevolent God created the universe than why are humans so messed up physically, genetically, etc.? I don't know about science but Christians have an explanation: the fall of man. The trials and tribulations of this earth are a result of mankind's choice not a god incapable of getting it right. I do not have the scientific background to argue the finer points regarding natural selection but the basic premise that the author sets out regarding supernatural design is not so easily refuted by simple reference to human imperfection.
