Skeptical Inquirer , July, 2001, by Paul Kurtz The Creation of CSICOP It is within this cultural milieu as background that I decided to convene a special conference to discuss "The New Irrationalisms: Antiscience and Pseudoscience." This was held on the newly built Amherst Campus of the State University of New York at Buffalo (where I was a professor) on April 30-May 2, 1976. I drafted a call inviting a number of leading scholars to the inaugural session of the proposed new organization. This was endorsed by many philosophers, including W. V. Quine, Sidney Hook, Ernest Nagel, Brand Blanshard, and Antony Flew. And I invited many of the well-known skeptical critics to this opening sessionMartin Gardner, Ray Hyman, Philip J. Klass, Marcello Truzzi, James Randi, L. Sprague de Camp, and Milbourne Christopher. The new organization, which I co-chaired with Truzzi, was to be called the Committee for the Scientific Investigation of Claims of the Paranormal (CSICOP). Our long-range goal was public education of the aims of science, particularly an appreciation for scientific methods of inquiry and critical thinking.

Skeptical Inquirer , July-August, 1999, by Paul Kurtz Skeptical inquirers can and should examine religious claims, though the case can be made that CSICOP should not. Scientific Inquiry The relationship between science and religion has engendered heated controversy. This debate has its roots in the historic conflict between the advocates of reason and the disciples of faith. On the current scene, there is a vocal hallelujah chorus singing praises to the mutual harmony and support of these two realms or "magisteria." I have serious misgivings about this alleged rapprochement, but I wish to focus on only one aspect of the controversy, and ask: To what extent should we apply skepticism to religious claims? Now the central questions that have been raised concern the range of skeptical inquiry. Are there areas such as religion in which science cannot enter? In particular, Should the skeptical movement extend its inquiry to religious questions? Some influential skeptics think we should not. In my view, skeptical inquirers definitely need to investigate religious claims. I do not think that CSICOP and the SKEPTICAL INQUIRER, however, should deal with religious claims; or if they do so, it should be only in a limited way. I shall deal with my reasons for these perhaps surprising statements later in this article.

Alien Autopsy Activity This activity, Alien Autopsy A Case Study for skeptical inquiry, has been developedto point out the need for students to evaluate and consider the viewpoint http://www.scire.com/pseudo/alien.html
Extractions: Pseudoscience Inquirer Scire Projects e-mail Overview This activity, Alien Autopsy - A Case Study for Skeptical Inquiry, has been developed to point out the need for students to evaluate and consider the viewpoint of references they might find on the Internet as well as address the growing presence of pseudoscience in our society. Introduction The fact that many schools are jumping on the "information superhighway" as a way to supplement dwindling resources in libraries should excite us. The Internet, used by students to dig out references for anything from book reports to research papers, should be used cautiously as we teach our students to evaluate the information found there. This is especially important in the sciences since the Internet is becoming a primary source for "publishing" pseudo-scientific theories. We need to educate our students, to paraphrase the famous sixties slogan, to "question the authority" of the references they find on the Internet. This activity uses a controversial video of a purported alien autopsy. This provides a basis for discussion that requires students to support stands they take relative to the video's authenticity. Students will need to use the Internet to search out information that might prove or disprove the video's claims. In the process of researching materials on the Internet, the diversity of viewpoints and the ability of anyone to present their information on the Internet will be made clear. It should also be clear how opinions are presented as fact, in many cases, and how important it is to require that referencesfrom the Internet or any resourcebe considered relative to the bias from which they are presented.
