Todays IC and system designers typically use either C or costly 2nd party tools to simulate/model Digital Signal Processing algorithms. While the latter are well suited for modeling "hardwired" DSP blocks with rather simplistic dataflows, they are very inefficient for modeling the control logic/circuitry that is often required in todays DSP applications (such as ADSL/V.34 modems). While C is well suited to control logic type structures (if/else, case, etc.), it is not highly desireable for manipulation of complex or user defined data types (such as fixed width integers). C++ bridges this gap and is the underlying language of choice for the costly/cumbersome GUI based tools. Objective The objective of SPUC is to provide the Communications Systems Designer or DSP Algorithm designer with simple, efficient and reusable DSP building block objects. Thus allowing a transition from System design to implementation in either programmable DSP chips or hardwired DSP logic. While Matlab is perhaps the most useful available tool for this purpose, it can be quite slow for simulation and it favors a matrix/block based approach rather than the sample by sample simulations that are often most useful for communications systems design. Also Matlab is generally awkward or inefficient when dealing with several interactive feedback loops where C/C++ is perhaps the most useful environment. For bit-accurate simulations (for VLSI design) C/C++ generally outperforms and is easier to manipulate than Matlab or other GUI-based tools. This Class Library 1) basic building blocks such as Complex data types, Fixed-bit width integer classes, pure-delay blocks, gaussian and random noise, etc, etc. 2) Basic DSP building blocks such as FIR, IIR, Allpass, Running Average, Lagrange interpolation filters, NCOs (numerically controlled oscillators), Cordic rotator. 3) Several communications functions such as timing, phase and frequency discriminators for BPSK/QPSK signals and raised-cosine type FIR filter functions. 4) Other miscellaneous DSP/Communications related functions/classes. The classes are designed so that they can be used in a simple straight forward manner. For example, a FIR would be initialized with its tap weights and then simply a member function would be called every time a sample is input or an output is required.

Extractions: Many radio amateurs involved in weak signal work invest considerable sums in hardware the best preamps, legal limit amplifiers, and the biggest antennas they can fit into their back yards. Unfortunately, they squander much of this capability on inefficient modulation schemes such as SSB and CW. This page describes how radio amateurs can use digital signal processing to take a "brains over brawn" approach to maximizing the effectiveness of their stations . A lot of hams think they need a special DSP chip (TMS320, 56001, etc) to do digital signal processing. This is simply not true! Modern general purpose CPUs have become quite capable digital signal processors in their own right. The Intel Pentium is one example. Its major difference from the 486 is a fast pipelined floating point unit. With careful and admittedly tricky programming, this CPU can stage one floating point multiply or add per clock cycle. At clock speeds up to 166 MHz, this is better than all but high-end dedicated DSPs. And that's floating point, so you don't have to worry about fixed-point scaling and overflow. So there is much that can be done with just a sound card you don't need a dedicated DSP box! Achieving maximum performance is, however, a challenge. The Intel floating point stack is not highly conducive to pipelining, and the architecture now has a lot of kludges grafted onto it to work around these problems (notably the FXCH instruction). But careful programming does pay off. Here are some samples of hand-optimized assembler code for various DSP operations on the Pentium:

He is also on the editorial boards of Signal Processing, Image Communication, Annals of Telecommunications, Applied and Computational Harmonic Analysis and The Journal of Fourier Analysis and Applications. He received the Best Paper Award of EURASIP in 1984 for his paper on multidimensional subband coding, the Research Prize of the Brown Bovery Corporation (Switzerland) in 1986 for his thesis, the IEEE Signal Processing Society's 1991 and 1996 Senior Awards for Transactions papers with D.LeGall and K.Ramchandran, respectively. In 1996, he received the Latsis price of the Swiss National Science Foundation. He was a plenary speaker at the 1992 IEEE ICASSP, and is the co-author, with J.Kovacevic, of the book
