Please check back regularly. This is not the page for the seti@home program. You need a radio telescope hooked to your computer to make use of software from this page. However, feel free to browse my web pages. This is an Excel plot of data I collected, using my home built radio telescope, measuring hydrogen line emissions along the plane of our galaxy. The long sweeping arcs are due to the hydrogen, in various arms of our galaxy, moving at different speeds relative to us resulting in a doppler shift of the hydrogen line emissions. There is also a shift in the frequencies of the emissions due to the motion of the Earth around the sun. Near degrees longitude on the chart we see a pair of peaks, this is due to hydrogen moving toward us on one side of the core and away from us on the other side. Another peak occurs at at approx 70-80 degrees when the dish is looking along our galactic arm. The peak at 180 degrees is due to the dish looking straight out of the galaxy, so the doppler shift of the hydrogen line emissions is very low. Extractions: By Horst Sommer ABSTRACT Carl Sagan's greatests achievements have not been given due credit by biographers, writers and the media. During 62 revolutions around our star, "one of his greatest gifts was the commitment to the truth. Not what's going to make you feel good, less afraid, less small, more central to the workings of the universe - but to what's true." (Ann Druyan: It is my own hope for Carl's memory that my husband be an inspiration to all for the search for truth.) Our species fear of death and of an uncertain future has given those who have something to sell, those who wish to influence public opinion, and those in power, a vested interest in discouraging skepticism and scientific investigation. Unlike most `one- dimensional' scientists Carl thrived on controversy and criticism. He spent equal time in debunking pseudo sciences as in astronomy research. He developed an interest in astronomy, it is said, at the age of 5, but his roots lay with his parents who taught him two models of thought central to scepticism and science - the virtue of questioning, and the joy of wonder. In the end he faced the fear as Albert Einstein and others before him - "satisfied with the mystery of the eternity of life and a glimpse of the marvelous structure of the existing world...striving to comprehend a portion, be it ever so tiny, of the Reason that manifests itself in nature."

Extractions: Since the beginning of civilization, people have wondered if we are alone in the universe or whether there is intelligent life somewhere else. In the late twentieth century, scientists converged upon the basic idea of scanning the sky and "listening" for non-random patterns of electromagnetic emissions such as radio or television waves in order to detect another possible civilization somewhere else in the universe. In late 1959 and early 1960, the modern SETI era began when Frank Drake conducted the first such SETI search at approximately the same time that Giuseppe Cocconi and Philip Morrison published a key journal article suggesting this approach. NASA joined in SETI efforts at a low-level in the late 1960s and early 1970s. Some of these SETI-related efforts included Project Orion, the Microwave Observing Project, the High Resolution Microwave Survey, and Toward Other Planetary Systems. On Columbus Day in 1992, NASA initiated a formal, more intensive, SETI program. Less than a year later, however, Congress canceled the program.
