The global density, relative amount of rocky material, and duration and intensity of geologic activity on each satellite all decrease with increasing distance from Jupiter. Each satellite is very distinctive in appearance and geologic history. Io, the densest and innermost major satellite, is volcanically active today. Europa has a highly fractured, young icy outer shell. Ganymede has a complex volcanic and tectonic history, and Callisto, the least dense and outermost satellite, is heavily cratered and rather bland by comparison. The geologic histories of these satellites are related to tidal deformation and heating, which is more intense closer to Jupiter.

Jonathan McDowell, of the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics, said in telephone interviews with Reuters on Wednesday and Thursday that nearly all of the omissions were due to administrative error. He played down any danger that weapons systems were being put in orbit, but singled out the United States, saying the issue was of growing concern as President Bush considers plans for a national missile defense system that could include some space-based systems. The United States is conducting a sweeping review of its defense capabilities and is considering spending billions of dollars for development of the system. "I can say the U.S. doesn't have 50 laser battle stations in space, but the more cavalier you are with this registration convention, the harder it is for us to have confidence that we can say that," McDowell said.

Many of these instruments use radar, visible light, or other means to produce pictures of the Earth. Others like the Argos System can locate transmitters on the Earth's surface and report the location or relay information from the transmitters to ground receiving stations. We will use the Argos System to locate the transmitters on travelling albatrosses in the Hawaiian Islands. At the nesting colony we will attach the transmitters to albatrosses when they are at their nests. From that point on, the Argos satellites will look for the transmitters every time they pass over the northern Pacific. If they locate one of the transmitters, they relay the location to ground stations in either Alaska, Virginia, or France. Eventually all of the location data end up in France, where they are processed and then sent every morning at 1:00 AM Eastern USA time to us at Wake Forest University, and we send the daily data on to the students participating in The Albatross Project.
