Instead of designing a new and different mechanical robot for each task, you just build many copies of one simple module. The module can't do much by itself, but when you connect many of them together you get a system that can do complicated things. In fact, a modular robot can even reconfigure itself change its shape by moving its modules around to meet the demands of different tasks or different working environments. This project addresses the question "What are the limitations on the number of modules for a useful modular reconfigurable robotic system? When you register an ID and password, the ROVer Ranch software creates a workplace for you to store your robots, paths, scripts, and simulation information so they don't get lost or mixed up with someone else's robot work. We have since continued with indoor navigation using scanning range measuring lasers, the range weighted Hough transform and autonomous map generation. Except for some limited tasks, fully autonomous robots are too difficult a problem to solve today. Therefor we concentrate our work on semi-autonomous robots and teleoperated robots where a human operator performs the difficult scene interpretation and makes the overall decisions while the robot does the simpler lowlevel tasks. As our robots grow more capable they can relieve the operator of more and more routine work. This allows us to create working systems long before we have a fully autonomous robot.
