RU Dept. Of Geology: Quaternary Studies Offers a multidisciplinary graduate certificate program allowing students to specialize in the study of the last few million years in earth's history, incorporating anthropology, geology, geography, biology, meteorology, and environmental science. http://geology.rutgers.edu/qstudies.html
Extractions: An Interdisciplinary Program Rutgers' Graduate Certificate in Quaternary Studies is a multidisciplinary program allowing students to specialize in the study of the last few million years in earth's historythe Late Cenozoic and Quaternary geologic time periods. The program explores the interaction of the lithosphere, hydrosphere, cryosphere, atmosphere, and biosphere of these years, during which fluctuations in climate triggered the development of continental-scale ice sheets, caused major changes in sea level, and initiated major migrations of animal and plant communities. These changes shaped our contemporary physical environment and stongly influenced evolution. This period saw the dawn of Homo sapiens and the simultaneous extinction of many other groups of organisms. Our knowledge of Late Cenozoic and Quaternary events helps researchers understand current environmental changes and may enable them to anticipate future changes affecting the earth and its inhabitants. The program offers students the opportunity to conduct interdisciplinary research in the fields of anthropology, geology, geography, biology, meteorology, and environmental science. Based on a broad, multidisclipinary approach, the program provides the necessary theoretical and practical background for students pursuing careers that may require specialized knowledge of the Late Cenozoic and Quaternary periods.
Fossil Beetles In Quaternary Environmental Studies BEETLES (COLEOPTERA) in quaternary studies at the Department of Geology,Colby College. The study of subfossil beetles (Class Insecta http://www.colby.edu/geology/Beetles.html
Extractions: The study of subfossil beetles (Class Insecta, Order Coleoptera) is becoming an important tool in understanding past environmental change. Virtually any non-marine sediment that has identifiable organic remains will include remains of insects, and many of these will be beetles. Remains that are frequently found and are readily identifiable include disarticulated [unattached] heads, pronota, and elytra. The first illustration at the right, of the ground beetle Schizogenius sulcifrons (family Carabidae) , shows these body parts. The sculptural elements that are the basis for much modern taxonomy are preserved and make the fragments frequently identifiable to the species level. Most beetles are quite specific as to habitat requirements, and those in non-island environments have undergone almost no evolutionary change in the Quaternary Period. We therefore can use their modern ecological requirements as a basis for interpreting what past environments must have been like. For example, the second figure shows a modern specimen of the rove beetle

(Note that there is a "1" for an unnamed taxon in this spread sheet; this is solely to avoid an error message in the percent column, generated by dividing by zero. It should be deleted from your counts.) Studies of Quaternary environments, those of roughly the last two million years of Earth history, are increasingly important as we struggle to understand the scale and rapidity of climatic and environmental changes in the modern world. How can we say, for example, that human activities are having major impacts on global climates if we can't say for sure what the natural rate of variability in those climate systems is? Colby students are introduced to techniques in Quaternary Paleoecology through a course ( ) that is required for Geology-Biology majors but open to all students meeting the prerequisites. In this course, students learn to identify some of the more important non-marine fossil groups that provide useful data to help us re-create what past environments must have been like, and from that information to approximate what past climatic parameters must have determined that biological environment. The study of palynomorphs (pollen grains) in sediments is one way that past vegetation changes can be assessed. Above, Colby students are shown preparing to study and sample a river-bluff exposure of sediments along the Sandy River, about a half-hour drive north of the campus; these samples will provide the basis for subsequent lab work during the semester. At left are pollen grains of bog laurel, a common

Extractions: The study of the Quaternary Period has a long and illustrious history at the University of Wisconsin - Madison, beginning with T.C. Chamberlin and R.D. Salisbury a century ago. The UW-Madison now has one of the largest, most diverse groups of Quaternary researchers in North America. Interdisciplinary research is a particular strength in the Quaternary program at UW-Madison. Students can pursue an M.S. or Ph.D. in Quaternary studies in one or more of the graduate departments on campus. In addition to course work required for disciplinary or joint degree or degrees, students take appropriate course work in a related minor discipline. ARCHAEOLOGY, GEOARCHAEOLOGY Much of the Quaternary- oriented climatological research at UW-Madison concerns the diagnosing and modeling of past and present climates on continent-wide and world-wide scales. This work includes using paleoenvironmental indicators, such as pollen and diatoms, to reconstruct climate changes over the past 18,000 years and the use of general-circulation and other climate models to simulate the behavior of past climates in the late Quaternary and the late Cenozoic. Additional research involves reconstructing the climatological history of the Great Lakes over the past several centuries. Faculty in most of the other areas of Quaternary studies on campus participate in research that deals with climate change and paleoclimates. GLACIOLOGY Glaciological research at UW-Madison is aimed at determining the physical characteristics of glaciers and ice sheets in order to understand their past behavior and predict future activity. Current work focuses on the West Antarctic ice sheet, especially its fast-moving ice streams. There is a strong emphasis on field work in Antarctica using geophysical techniques and remote sensing. Glaciers in equatorial Africa and Alaska are also studied.

Extractions: Our program involves interdisciplinary research into Earth's present environmental conditions and biota as compared with the Quaternary geologic record. In geologic time, the Quaternary Period is represented by the Pleistocene, the Ice Age, and the Holocene, or Recent, epochs. Dynamic changes in climate, vegetation, fauna, and geologic and pedagogic processes are registered in the geologic record of this period, which covers the last 1.6 million years. This period also witnessed the development of the human species and the arrival of early humans in the New World. In studying this period, our M.S. program allows you to obtain specialized interdisciplinary research and academic training. Our faculty have numerous research projects in Arizona and throughout the Colorado Plateau, and excellent opportunities exist for research in other regions of North America, including California and the Great Basin. One major goal of our program is to provide you with practical knowledge of the peer review process, which includes writing grant proposals, producing research manuscripts, and presenting results at scientific meetings.
