CR Handbook : One Article Given the rich diversity of Costa Rica's ecosystems, it may come as a surprise that there are only 200 mammal species in the nation, half of which are bats. And Costa Rica, like most neotropical countries, has "a depauperate marine mammal flora," in the words of one biologist. Several species of dolphins and seven species of whales are common in Costa Rican waters, but there are no seals. And the only endemic species of any significance is the endangered manatee. Before man hunted them to extinction, there were many more mammal species. Even today all large and many small mammal populations are subject to extreme hunting pressure or habitat destruction, and it is only recently that large-mammal populations in the national parks are beginning to recover. Like most large mammals, jaguars and tapirs are shy and stay well clear of people. Sighting one would be cause for great celebration! Still, most visitors can expect to see one or more species of monkeys, one of Costa Rica's four ecologically unique tropical mammals; the others are sloths, anteaters, and noninsectivorous bats. And luck, patience, and the aid of a professional guide can lead to thrilling encounters with other species. Early morning and late afternoon are the best times for wildlife viewing, particularly around waterholes (the dry regions of Guanacaste offer prime locations). I recommend joining a natural-history tour or guided day-tours through one of the many tour companies specializing in wildlife programs (see p. 142).

Yet throughout the global marine environment, signs of ecologic deterioration are apparent: beach closings, red tides, and shellfish health advisories due to sewage contamination; infectious diseases in coral reefs, tumors in sea turtles, eggshell thinning and reproductive problems among fish-eating birds; infertility, cancer, and virus-related mortalities among marine mammals.

Extractions: Article written by David A. Snow from Wildland Tours , in St. John's, Newfoundland Part of the adventure of travel involves seeing animals. Whether it is a moose or a vole, people always talk about the wildlife they see in the countryside or near a highway. Local knowledge plus an understanding of animal behaviour and habitats are keys to spotting animals. In addition, animal watchers need to develop a quiet step and a keen, patient eye. Once these have been mastered, the reward is often a great view or photograph of animals at work or play in the Newfoundland and Labrador wilderness. A mammal is a warm-blooded animal. The young are fed milk by the mother. All the province's mammals give live birth to their young. This page describes the land mammals of Newfoundland and Labrador, plus when and where to go to see species of special interest. The story of this province's mammals began 15,000 years ago with the last Ice Age. The huge ice sheets covering Labrador, Newfoundland, and much of the Grand Banks started to melt. Our mammals followed the edge of the ice as it retreated north. The plant eaters fed off the new growth springing up around the glacier's edge. Their predators followed. Some scientists believe that many mammals, making their way to Newfoundland and Labrador, came from the now-submerged lands south of the Grand Banks. As new lands were exposed by the receding icecaps, Arctic hare, caribou, and other mammals began moving north. It was mostly animals of the cold open spaces that arrived in Newfoundland before the Island became separated and isolated from the rest of North America. Mammals such as otters and bats arrived later, the ocean not being much of a barrier for them.

Marine Mammal Consulting Group, Inc Implements offshore mitigation plans and marine conservation. Gives information about marine mammals, projects undertaken, photographs and contact details. http://www.mmcg.net
Extractions: MMCG is an independent consulting firm created in response to increased environmental mitigation requirements for offshore projects. MMCG prepares compliance documents, develops mitigation strategies and provides monitoring teams to avoid potential impacts to marine mammals and other wildlife. These same services are offered in connection with submerged cultural and historical resources as well as with permit compliance requirements. MMCG was established in 1992 by Peter Howorth and Lad Handelman. Howorth has worked with marine mammals since 1962. He is recognized by state and federal regulatory agencies as a mitigation expert. He has worked extensively in this country as well as in other countries. Handelman was a founder and CEO of two of today's premier offshore underwater contractors, Oceaneering International and Cal Dive International. MMCG is the contractor of choice when it comes to environmental planning and offshore mitigation. In the performance of hundreds of projects during the span of this last decade, no significant impacts to marine wildlife have occurred when MMCG has performed the mitigation. No complaints from the public, environmental groups or regulatory agencies have been made for any MMCG projects.
