Extractions: Back to Index The sun and earth constitute an energy system. The sun produces energy, approximately 4*10^26 watts, of which the earth receives a portion, approximately 1.7*10^17 watts. Of the solar energy coming to earth, a proportion is reflected, a proportion is absorbed by the atmosphere and a proportion is absorbed by the earth. The earth, like all matter, radiates energy proportional to (the 4th power of) its temperature (Kelvin). A proportion of the radiated energy is absorbed by the atmosphere and a proportion of the radiated energy escapes to space. This is frequently called the global energy balance . For more information on this subject see Earth's Annual Global Mean Energy Budget. If the atmosphere were magically removed from the above system, the equilibrium temperature at the earth surface would be approximately -15C. In fact the measured temperature at the earth surface is approximately +15C. The approximately 30 degree difference is due to what is called the natural greenhouse effect. If one looks at the range of temperature variations over the lifetime of the planet, there have been many changes.
Extractions: The Department of Energy's decision to drop early credits from its proposed rule to revise the voluntary reporting of greenhouse gases program was a policy breakthrough as significant as the Senate's defeat of the McCain-Lieberman bill and EPA's disavowal of authority to regulate carbon dioxide. In this comment to DOE, CEI and ten other pro-market groups explain why DOE made the right decision and should resist lobbying pressures to reinstate Kyoto credits.

Extractions: GLOBAL WARMING Global Warming is perhaps the most significant environmental problem facing the world today. Greenhouse gas levels are increasing in the atmosphere because of human activities, and are changing the composition of the atmosphere and warming the earth. Climate scientists agree that human activities such as the burning of fossil fuels contribute to the problem. Scientists have predicted the phenomemon of global warming for decades. Unfortunately, some of the adverse impacts (link to impacts page) from global warming that they also predicted are starting to occur around the world, including: Increasing incidence of droughts in some areas, flooding in others;

Plant Trees To Reduce Global Warming Calculations of carbon dioxide emissions are offered for various modes of travel and energy use (1 tree per 1000 kilowatthours, for example). http://www.angelfire.com/fl4/globalcooling/
Extractions: Relax. Reduce what you can and plant trees in the tropics to absorb the rest. This book focuses on the three actions you can take to cool the planet. These Global Cooling actions are: 1) Use fossil fuels more efficiently and switch to renewable fuels; 2) Protect old-growth trees and rainforest as warehouses for carbon and harvest existing forests in a sustainable manner; and 3) Plant trees in the tropics to offset the carbon dioxide that we produce.
Beakman & Jax - Global Warming global warming. Question What does cutting down trees have to do with saving the ozone layer global warming. WHAT YOU NEED 2 empty jars water. http://www.beakman.com/beakman/warm/warm.html
Extractions: Not much at all! Except that both are happening on Earth and both seem to have been created by humans, there is nothing that cutting down trees has to do with the ozone layer. The media - like newspapers and stupid jokes on TV - explained it very, very badly. They make it seem as though the two things are connected. But they are not! Tell as many people as You Can. Tell them they've got it all wrong! Read this and then explain it to them. Again, the ozone layer and global warming are 2 separate things. They are caused by 2 separate things humans do to the planet. They are not related. Each one is a very big problem. We can't solve either one of them until we can all understand what's going on. So read this and then start talking about it to whoever will listen. Global Warming WHAT YOU NEED:
Extractions: Letter from Frederick Seitz Research Review of Global Warming Evidence Below is an eight page review of information on the subject of "global warming," and a petition in the form of a reply card. Please consider these materials carefully. The United States is very close to adopting an international agreement that would ration the use of energy and of technologies that depend upon coal, oil, and natural gas and some other organic compounds. This treaty is, in our opinion, based upon flawed ideas. Research data on climate change do not show that human use of hydrocarbons is harmful. To the contrary, there is good evidence that increased atmospheric carbon dioxide is environmentally helpful. The proposed agreement would have very negative effects upon the technology of nations throughout the world, especially those that are currently attempting to lift from poverty and provide opportunities to the over 4 billion people in technologically underdeveloped countries.

Chemical & Engineering News Climate Observations Substantiate global warming Models. Many people believe that a great deal of controversy surrounds the science of global warming. http://pubs.acs.org/hotartcl/cenear/951127/pg1.html
Extractions: support projected global temperature increase Many people believe that a great deal of controversy surrounds the science of global warming. In reality, however, scientists in the field do agree on many aspects of global warming. For example, on the basis of a variety of evidence a consensus is emerging among researchers that human beings, primarily through their burning of fossil fuels, are already perturbing Earth's climate - defined as weather averaged across years and large regions. This consensus, and the evidence that supports it, are documented in the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change's (IPCC) latest report on the science of global warming. The 2,000-plus page report, written by about 500 scientists and reviewed by about 500 other experts, will be released next month. IPCC was established in 1988 under the auspices of the UN Convention on Climate Change to review the science of global warming and to advise some 70 countries on ways to mitigate and prevent it. IPCC issues a major report every five years. The report will be available at the Office of the U.S. Global Change Research Program, Washington, D.C. Global mean temperature has been on the rise since 1880 Climate experts agree that the average global air temperature has risen 0.3 to 0.6 Celcius over the past century. This finding is substantiated by other indicators - accelerated melting of alpine glaciers, a sea-level rise of 10 to 25 cm over the past 100 years, and coral bleaching caused by anomalously high sea-surface temperatures - that are all consistent with the increase in global air temperatures. And according to present indications, the average global temperature in 1995 is likely to be as high as or higher than in any year since record keeping began around 1860.

Time.com People Fortune EW InStyle Business 2.0 SILVER SPRING, Maryland (CNN) President Bush Thursday unveiled a series of tax credits and other incentives to encourage business and farmers to reduce harmful emissions, a less stringent alternative to the international Kyoto treaty he rejected last year. "America and the world share this common goal, we must foster economic growth in ways that protect our environment," Bush said at the National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration. "We must encourage growth that will provide a better life for citizens, while protecting the land, the water, the air that sustain life." But some Democrats, including former Vice President Al Gore, and environmental groups greeted the plan with criticism, noting that it was voluntary in nature.
