21. Natural Perspective: Sac Fungi (Phylum Ascomycota)
    Natural Perspective. The Fungus Kingdom Sac fungi. (Last modified24 July 1997). The Sac fungi (Ascomycota) are a diverse group.

    Extractions: The Sac Fungi ( Ascomycota ) are a diverse group. Most of these fungi do not produce substantial mushrooms; even fewer produce mushrooms worth eating. But Ascomycota do produce some of the most highly valued mushrooms: Morels and Truffles as well as the more unusual mushrooms such as the Candlesnuff fungus pictured here. Sac fungi produce spores inside cases ( asci ) which may open at one end. This gives Ascomycota the ability to discharge spores forcefully by squeezing the asci . Several species including the Helvella and Xylaria pictured here release a cloud of spore "smoke" when disturbed. This phenomenon is quite interesting to observe and is also a useful diagnostic for identification: if the mushroom releases a cloud of light spores it is probably in this Phylum. (Note, though, that Puffballs and Earthstars may also release spores in a cloud, but they require an external force to eject the spores.) Black Morel Morchella elata Finding morels is a real challenge. Morels have a special knack for hiding out in the open. The casual observer may see the morel as a pebble or a pine cone and pass it by without even noticing. Morel hunters talk about "tuning their eyes" at the beginning of each morel season.

    Extractions: When INVAM was at the University of Florida, refrigerated cultures of some accessions appeared to have a short storage life. As a result of these problems, Douds and Schenck (1990) developed a procedure to store dried contents of pot cultures in liquid nitrogen summarized in their abstract (with the most important result highlighted in red): Storage of spores of vesicular-arbuscular (VA) mycorrhizal fungi in soil at 5°C is a common way of preserving these fungi. This method was satisfactory for Glomus intraradices but not for Gigaspora margarita Glomus mosseae , and Acaulospora longula . Preservation of spores at -60 to -70 °C was examined. Cryoprotectants such as DMSO, glycerol, mannitol, and sucrose were ineffective using the freeze-damage sensitive species G. margarita . Incubation for 47 h in 0.75 to 1.0 M trehalose conferred a measure of freeze damage protection to the spores such that germination rates of previously frozen spores of G. margarita

    Extractions: Fungi are plant-like organisms that lack chlorophyll. Fungi are one of the five kingdoms of life . Many fungi are good and useful (edible mushrooms would be an example of these) while some cause problems (some fungi can injure plants and people). There are over 100,000 species of fungi. Mycologists are the scientists who study fungus. Medical mycologists study drugs to cure fungal infections, while agricultural and research mycologists study the industrial uses of fungi. Since they do not have chlorophyll, fungi must absorb food from others. Since they don't use light to make food, fungi can live in damp and dark places. Fungi are supposed to "eat" things when they are dead but sometimes they start eating when the organism is still alive. That is when mycologists come in to figure out what to give to the infected patient or plant to get rid of the fungus.
