Extractions: General Description The term "Stoicism" derives from the Greek word "stoa," referring to a colonnade, such as those built outside or inside temples, around dwelling-houses, gymnasia, and market-places. They were also set up separately as ornaments of the streets and open places. The simplest form is that of a roofed colonnade, with a wall on one side, which was often decorated with paintings. Thus in the market-place at Athens the stoa poikile (Painted Colonnade) was decorated with Polygnotus's representations of the destruction of Troy, the fight of the Athenians with the Amazons, and the battles of Marathon and Oenoe. Zeno of Citium taught in the stoa poikile in Athens, and his adherents accordingly obtained the name of Stoics. Zeno was followed by Cleanthes, and then by Chrysippus, as leaders of the school. The school attracted many adherents, and flourished for centuries, not only in Greece, but later in Rome, where the most thoughtful writers, such as Marcus Aurelius, Seneca, and Epictetus, counted themselves among its followers. We know little for certain as to what share particular Stoics, Zeno, Cleanthes, or Chrysippus, had in the formation of the doctrines of the school, But after Chryssipus the main lines of the doctrine were complete. The stoic doctrine is divided into three parts: logic, physics, and ethics. Stoicism is essentially a system of ethics which, however, is guided by a logic as theory of method, and rests upon physics as foundation. Contemporary culture, in contrast, is permeated with arguments against capital punishment. Even among those professing Christian faith, there is widespread opposition to the death penalty. As a trend, the ever-increasing role of the media in manipulating public sentiment in the face of pressing ethical debates promises not to subside. While we may grant that the Christian community is divided over this issue and while we take no delight in its clarification, the church in keeping with its earthly mandate is to instruct the state in matters of justice. The highly publicized 1992 executions of Robert Alton Harris (California) and Roger Keith Coleman (Virginia), for better or worse, injected a new level of urgency into the debate over capital punishment. In both cases the extent to which the American public was treated to a numbing display of sentimentality by media pundits was nothing short of breathtaking. A more recent case involving a disabled murderer, Charles Sylvester Stamper, further fueled the death penalty debate on a national level. Stamper, who killed three people in a restaurant robbery, became the first person in a wheelchair to be put to death since the

The Council, an independent body that examines the ethical issues raised by developments in medicine and biology, was established in 1991; it is funded by The Nuffield Foundation, the Medical Research Council, and The Wellcome Trust. I now have time to pursue my hobby, stone sculpture. I spend much of my office time helping friends and former patients seek care for their current medical problems. How did you get started in pain? My primary training was in orthopedic surgery, with a subspecialty in spine problems. In 1971, I wrote a book, Living With Your Bad Back. It resulted in an increase in back pain referrals who did well with a multidisciplinary treatment program. Based on that experience, I organized a multidisciplinary pain program at RIC. At about that time, I met John Bonica as he was recruiting people to go to Florence, Italy, for an IASP meeting. Although I was not able to attend, I became an APS member; this finalized my decision to change my practice to pain management.

Standards of professional behavior were codified in the late17th century and officially adopted by medical associations as early as the mid-19th century. The ethics of medical research were more recently codified and adopted after abuses of ethical and moral standards by Nazi doctors in WWII concentration camps. Such abuses have not been exclusive to wartime. Doctors of the American Public Health Service committed ethical misconduct and racism in human research by denial of treatment for syphilis in 399 African-American men from 1932 to 1972 in Tuskegee, Alabama. In the future medical ethics will adapt to changes in science and society, but must remain rooted in beneficence, respect for persons, and justice. Continuing evolution in medical ethics is occurring with the advent of new reproductive technologies, the Human Genome Project, cloning stem cells , gene therapy and xenotransplantation. The origins of medical and research ethics are examined below.
