Extractions: Electrochemistry Electrochemistry involves oxidation-reduction reactions that can be brought about by electricity or used to produce electricity Oxidation and reduction, which will be considered here as the loss and gain of electrons, occur in many chemical systems. The rusting of iron, the photosynthesis that takes place in the leaves of green plants, and the conversion of foods to energy in the body are all examples of chemical changes that involve the transfer of electrons from one chemical species to another. When such reactions can be made to cause electrons to flow through a wire or when a flow of electrons makes a redox reaction happen, the processes are referred to as electrochemical changes . The study of these changes is called electrochemistry The applications of electrochemistry are widespread. Batteries, which produce electrical energy by means of chemical reactions are in almost anything portable and electronic. In the laboratory, electrical measurements enable us to monitor chemical reactions of all sorts, even those in systems as tiny as a living cell. In industry, many important chemical - including liquid bleach (sodium hypochlorite) and lye (sodium hydroxide) are manufactured by electrochemical means. If it weren't for electrochemistry the important structural metals of aluminum and magnesium would only be laboratory curiosities and most people would see them only in museums.

Count Alessandro Giuseppe Antonio Anastasio Volta: A pioneer in Electrochemistry Courtesy of Willie Weinberg Purpose This report focuses on the life of Volta, details his inventions, and illuminates Volta's influence in electrochemistry. Electrochemistry Electrochemistry is that branch of science which deals with the inter-conversion of chemical and electrical energies, i.e., with chemical changes produced by electricity as in the production of electricity by chemical action as in electric cells or batteries.2 Originating at the turn of the eighteenth century, the field of electrochemistry really did not open up until the start of the 1800's when an Italian physicist, Alessandro Volta, made significant advances. The Life of Volta Count Alessandro Giuseppe Antonio Anastasio Volta was born in Como, Lombardy, on February 18, 1745. Volta was born to nobility that had moved down in social station. Unlike his siblings, young Alessandro did not enter the church. His young childhood did not show the makings of a prodigy. It was not until the age of four that he talked, and his family was convinced that he was retarded. However, at the age of seven when his father died, he was at the level of other children and then began to march ahead. By the age of fourteen, he made up his mind to be a physicist.

Its members come from further and higher education and public and private research laboratories. Moreover, the Group boasts a significant number of international members. The objectives of the Group are to organise events, promote the involvement of postgraduate students in regional, national and international conferences, inform its members and provide a mechanism for discussion. In order to advise research councils and industries, the Group co-ordinates reports on current and future trends in research and applications of electrochemistry. Meetings The primary mission of the Electrochemistry Group is to provide a central focus for the development of basic, strategic and applied electrochemistry. The group plays a central role in the organisation of the main UK national electrochemistry conference every year, the Electrochem Conference Series, which, since the first Electrochem '94 conference in Edinburgh, has established itself as a central forum for discussion and debate.

Humphry Davy Electrochemistry Short article how he proved that it was not using two different metals that made the Voltaic Pile work. http://fargo.itp.tsoa.nyu.edu/~lewis/electricity/pages/davy.html
Extractions: Humphry Davy (1778-1829), an English chemist, proved that it was not using two different metals that made the Voltaic Pile work. The electricity was actually caused by the chemical reaction caused by the cloth soaked in brine that Volta had used to increase conductivity. Davy was able to create an electric current from the same metal in two different fluids with the metal in each fluid touching. Among his early experiments, he used the Voltaic Pile to decompose water into hydrogen and oxygen. In fact he used this method to decompose several compounds and in the process discovered several new elements. Fun Word Fact: The process of decomposing compounds electrically is electrolysis Return to Timeline
