Extractions: Department of Botany Welcome to the Department of Botany Botany is a modern and dynamic science, covering a range of disciplines from molecular biology and biotechnology to ecology and conservation. It involves the study of plants and related organisms like fungi and algae. Knowledge of these organisms contributes greatly to our understanding of both natural ecosystems and agriculture. Plants impact on many aspects of daily life, including providing food, medicines, paper and building materials, and recreation and tourism. The staff of the Department are actively involved in many of these areas of research, and this range of interests is reflected in the subjects that we teach at all levels from undergraduate to Honours and Postgraduate studies. Pinus Ponderosa of the species. Common names include Ponderosa pine, Norway pine, big pine, British Columbia soft pine, western yellow pine, and several others. http://www.botany.ubc.ca/arboretum/UBC001.HTM
Extractions: The Latin name ponderosa, meaning heavy or imposing, was given by Irish botanist David Douglas. Identification: A pine with dark yellow-green needles in fascicles of 2 or 3. The needles are 10-20 cm long and often curved or twisted, forming tightly clustered tufts at the ends of branches. The bark is a bright reddish-orange or cinnamon colour and deeply furrowed into a pattern of scales and plates. In the hot sun it smells of vanilla. The crown of the tree is broad and open. The oval or egg shaped seed cones are notable for their scales, each tipped by a single prickle. Habitat: The pine is common in western North America from B.C. to Mexico. It has a large altitudnal range, and is often found in pure stands or as the dominant tree in mixed conifer forests. It is intolerant of shade and severe cold, but does well in dry regions. It cannot regenerate under its own canopy and requires thinning by fire or other means before it can propagate. Uses: As well as being a popular ornamental, the fast growing Ponderosa Pine is second only to Douglas Fir as a lumber producing species in North America. First Nations groups also used the tree in heavy constructionfor corrals, fences, sweathouses, and roof beams. Large tree trunks were hollowed out to make canoes. The wood often has high pitch content and is decay resistant and inflammable.
